Hello Alan... I live on the same road as the pub (yes in Camberwell), and it is known locally as Hoopers, as far as I can tell.

Have you still not got your head round the concept of pubs changing name? And why have I not heard you being so defensive about any of the other pubs which have had recent name changes?

Anyway, yes it is a good pub with the best selection of beer anywhere in SE5, SE15, or SE22! Not just continental beer either.

I live on Hooters (Formerly Ivanhoe) Road!

The "East Dulwich, SE5" address does stick in the throat a little. But I'm not sure the name change is a symptom of this. A few pubs in Camberwell have changed names over the last few years, as have (seemingly) most of the pubs in East Dulwich and Herne Hill. Yes it is a fairly shit name, but no more so than "The Magnolia" or "The Florence"!

The Ivanhoe was hardly the height of imagination, pubs should have proper names like The Slaughtered Lamb or The Green Man, nice bit of folk tale and witchcraft.

It all went downhill when we started naming pubs after princes regent and imperial consorts if you ask me!!

I just came accross this thread by chance. Alan still seems to think that I changed the name of the pub for my greater gloriment. Nothing could be further from the truth. When we took over, the locals would not use the place because it had been run antisocially to the extent that when the new licensing act began in 2005, the locals objected to the licence & there was a hearing at the council which ensured that they could not have live music or open later than 11pm.

It took at least a year before residents gradually realised that we would run it differently, & work with local people. It was a new broom, and therefore it was an indication that there was a change. Like Mockney, I like traditional names but Ivanhoe indicates tht it was named after the road, which was a lack of imagination on the part of the Victorians.

As for the "East Dulwich" on the website, that was he work of the local person living in the next street who set up the website. However we feel part of the East Dulwich community as that is where the local P.O., bank, shops etc. are, and to the point where all the local people hereabouts shop and socialise. It is purely a historical accident where postal borders were placed, and if our local centre happened to be either Peckham or Camberwell, I would be just as happy. When I first arrived I mistakenly assumed that there was an area called Denmark Hill (as opposed to a station or road). I never realised how much it might mean to some people. However no offence or assumption was intended or made.

Phew! Now that's off my chest, let's get back to enjoying good beer and good company! A Happy New Year to all our Readers!

I never went in there when it was The Ivanhoe (I lived up the other end of ED back then), but the reports I've heard are not exactly gushing. So I can't blame Jamie for changing the name - fresh start and all that. Look on BeerInTheEvening... Ivanhoe gets 3/10, Hoopers gets 7.9/10.

Alan - Why is it a shame that The Snug was changed to The Castle? I doubt it had been called The Snug for very long, and it was a daft name anyway! I think the Black Sheep changed name a few years ago too.

I used to live next to the The Ivanhoe Pub - it was generally disliked by the local community. Jamie was quite right to rename it and he has worked hard to win people over - well done for doing so.

I have been in Hoopers many more times than I ever went in The Ivanhoe.

The road has been called Ivanhoe Road since at least the 1880s... so it is almost certainly the original name. Unlikely it was named after a pub.

Given the evidence, I think they had a very good case for changing the name. In fact, I think they probably had little choice!

Go on Alan, admit you're wrong. You can just delete all your posts on the subject (like your posts on house prices). I won't hold it against you.

I've been going into Hoopers quite a bit recently and love it in there. It has the finest ales around for miles and a very friendly atmosphere and the food is very good too. I just wish more people would go in there as it can be rather quiet at times and would hate to think it would go the way of The Oglander and end up as flats.

I remember when it was the Ivanhoe (Err...Sir Walter Scott's novel of the same name Alan?) and it could be a bit rough but that was a hell of a long time ago. I can only say good things about Hoopers from my own experience and congratulate the fine work that Jaimie and Vivien have put into the place.

It does seem that some of us have a personal beef with Hoopers.

A pub by an other names would smell as sweet.

The jazz and the folk music and indeed the string quartet that was present during the last drinks there all provide a different experience to other pubs. Table football? Pool table? Nice enough, but a bit passe.

    • That’s another big hike on the Sainsbury’s mini rolls! I spoke to one of the managers on the day of the anchovies price rise but all he could say was that his store doesn’t set the prices. Very vague and not helpful. i started this thread about price rises in  Sainsbury’s and it’s somehow being blamed on Brexit etc!
    • And the Sainsbury’s own brand chocolate mini rolls have gone from £1.15 to £1.40 overnight, so 22%-ish. I prefer them them to the Cadbury original because they have a lot more chocolate on them, presumably because they’re made in a less advanced factory. I would think that getting the Rizla thin coating of chocolate that Cadbury’s accountants demand onto a piece of sponge is quite a sophisticated operation. Discuss.
