Otta
His daughter's statement."My family has always been private about our time spent together. It was our way of keeping one thing that was ours, with a man we shared with an entire world. But now that's gone, and I feel stripped bare. My last day with him was his birthday, and I will be forever grateful that my brothers and I got to spend that time alone with him, sharing gifts and laughter. He was always warm, even in his darkest moments. While I'll never, ever understand how he could be loved so deeply and not find it in his heart to stay, there's minor comfort in knowing our grief and loss, in some small way, is shared with millions. It doesn't help the pain, but at least it's a burden countless others now know we carry, and so many have offered to help lighten the load. Thank you for that. To those he touched who are sending kind words, know that one of his favourite things in the world was to make you all laugh. As for those who are sending negativity, know that some small, giggling part of him is sending a flock of pigeons to your house to poop on your car. Right after you've had it washed. After all, he loved to laugh too?Dad was, is and always will be one of the kindest, most generous, gentlest souls I've ever known, and while there are few things I know for certain right now, one of them is that not just my world, but the entire world is forever a little darker, less colourful and less full of laughter in his absence. We'll just have to work twice as hard to fill it back up again."The line "While I'll never, ever understand how he could be loved so deeply and not find it in his heart to stay" is heartbreaking. Parkdrive
The line "While I'll never, ever understand how he could be loved so deeply and not find it in his heart to stay" is heartbreakingYes it is but unfortunately depression can drive people to a point where death is the only escape. Yes I know its morbid but that's the reality of it. Until ther is greater undertsanding of mental health, we will continue to get the likes of that twat Alan Brazil on talk shite making ill informed and insensitive remarks. Otta
I agree with you completely. It's terrible for the ones left behind, but I personally can't abide the whole "selfish" angle. You might like this article which I saw yesterdayhttp://www.theguardian.com/science/brain-flapping/2014/aug/12/robin-williams-suicide-and-depression-are-not-selfish Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/47856-robin-williams-dead/page/2/#findComment-773436 Share on other sites
PokerTime
Good article Otta.Depression is a constant state of pain, stress, and/or panic. It's hard for many people to have a conception of what that feels like, without direct experience. There needs to be a greater awareness and more understanding of the difficulties faced by sufferers than there is at present. Pugwash
Being married to someone who has Bipolar and for at least 4 - 6 months of each year is in a depressed phase, my hubby admits he has thought at times about suicide as he feels that the pain he inflicts on his family is too much for us, and we would be happier without him. He also states that he would also be a coward and chicken out of suicide as he is afraid of pain and it going wrong. There are people who use attempted suicides as a plea for help. I have worked with others who enjoy the attention they receive after a suicide attempt. It is usually those who we least think about will attempt the act, succeed.I enjoyed all of Robin's performances being it comedy and straight. He was quite manic at times on TV interviews and one wonders whether he was bi polar. PokerTime
Bipolar or manic, it really doesn't matter. Clinical depression is a lifelong battle. Some find ways to manage it, others don't. Either way, until we find an effective way to make life less stressful and painful for those who suffer from it, we will continue to have these head scratching moments, where a successful public icon succumbs. Every day people with severe depressive illness suffer excrutiating pain. Many of them are at the mercy of ATOS for example in this country. If any good can come out of Robin's death, it has to be a concerted effort to help those who are debilatated by this merciless condition. A less stressful dog eat dog society would be a start. nashoi
Reporting of suicides is very strictly controlled in some countries, iirc Denmark in particular and there are WHO guidelines on it.I'd be interested to know how well those rules work in the case of someone this famous though. New Girl
I've recently spent time with a friend who I haven't seen in a while and never appreciated the anxiety and struggle she goes through and she had vaguely touched upon it many moons ago. On the outside she glows. Ever confident and smiling. That happy go lucky facade. But deep down she's in real pain and I only completely realised the other week. It pained me not realise just how deep it went and how fragile she looked. Pugwash I take a bow to you and your family and your husband. It takes patience and a lot of love and care to support someone who goes through this. I don't mean to sound condescending but my friends husband left her as he couldn't deal with it so I admire anyone that does. And yeah Salsaboy I want her body in a few years time :) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/47856-robin-williams-dead/page/2/#findComment-773834 Share on other sites
