izzybob
We have a one year old and a (nearly) three year old and have been meaning to go swimming with them more often for ages. They both love being in the water, but the timings of swimming lessons just haven't worked (or no childcare for the non-swimming child) and we've been fairly rubbish at getting organised to go as a family at the weekend.Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knew of an instructor who would be willing to do private lessons for the two children with me in the pool as well? Preferably at the Dulwich pool, but would also consider Camberwell or Peckham pools. I'd probably want to give it a trial first (not looking forward to getting them changed by myself!), but would be willing to commit to weekly lessons if it all went well. Thanks very much. Lula
Hi there, I recommend that you just sign your 3 year old up to a class with other kids. My 4 year old has been attending classes for a year and loves going as from 3 they can go in the pool by themselves - and you don't have to go in! He enjoys the interaction with other kids and the sense of achievement when he learns something new on his own while I'm watching on the sideline. I also bought him some swim goggles which made it very easy for him to go under water without worrying about the water stinging his eyes.I have a 2 year old too and I've taken her occasionally to the pool at Forest Hill and in pools on holiday but haven't started classes yet. I did start classes with my son from around 1 year but he hated going in the end so I stopped it. I would say that those early classes I did with my son - while fun - made no difference to his swimming ability (he had a break from swimming for about a year)so unless you really want to do classes with your youngest, don't worry if the timings don't work out. nunheadmum
You could try contacting Superkids Swimming and asking if any of their instructors do private lessons. Their instructors are great with kids. They also have a lovely toddler class over in Beckenham some days which are really sweet as parents are right next to the pool. Lula
nunheadmum ? that's exactly where we used to go, and Superkids was the company that held our classes. Highly recommend them. izzybob
Thanks Lula and nunheadmum. I'll have a look into Superkids. The Beckenham class sounds great, but I don't have a car so it would be tricky to get over there. I would, though, be quite keen on getting our oldest into group lessons eventually, but would like to do a few in the pool with him first to get his confidence up. I did lessons with our youngest when he was tiny, but had to stop as couldn't get childcare for his big brother, which was a real shame as he loved it and still does on the rare occasions we go swimming.I thought that a private instructor would be the best solution as it means I don't need to find child care for one or the other and they can "learn" together. I know I could watch a class with our youngest, but he spends so much of his time following his brother around, I thought it would be good for him to do something he enjoys too! susyp
You could just go and have fun- especially if you take a rubber ring as you can put one in that to make it easier for you to manage both. My daughter only started formal group lessons last September aged 5 and she can swim a little now. She's in a class with school mates who started lessons aged 2! I have seen some very young children swimming but on the whole te not unt they are around 4 that they can really learn Susypx Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/47849-private-swimming-lessons-for-toddlers/#findComment-773542 Share on other sites
Pickle
We waited until our kids were 3 and 4, then signed them up for lessons at Crystal Palace - they could be in the same class, and no parents required :)They are now (aged 6 and 7) in stage 4, and swimming in a 2m deep Olympic pool confidently. One of the girls in their class started lessons at 6 months old, and is at exactly the same level as my kids who started 3ish years later. There is a toddler class on at the same time as their lesson, and it's all about fun - singing songs, splashing, making it fun and building confidence. My husband takes our 2 year old for a swim while the older kids are in their lesson which works really well. Personally I'd save your money, and just make sure you take your little one for a splash about every now and then.
