I know it's not boxing, but do any of you guys like UFC stuff? For years I thought it was a load of rubbish, because what I had seen of it seemed to involve so much of the grappling on the mat / ground & pound stuff that it just did nothing for me. But in the past year or so I've started watching some of their big matches, and I think I'm becoming a convert.

The fight between Ireland's Connor McGregor (total prick) and America's Nate Diaz (also a prick) last weekend was really really entertaining and hard fought. Worth a watch if you're interested in dipping your toe in.

I'm a fan of all fighting to be honest, whether it's boxing, UFC, kick-boxing (especially the Burmese stuff).

The UFC is more 'real' than boxing as it's not just about stand-up fighting. Most fights out and about end-up on the floor, so IMO those skills are hugely underated.

I don't follow non-boxing styles on TV much though as they're rarely shown (as is boxing). I do look on YT a bit, where you can find such content and also for actual fights, as my interest really lies there.

Next time Connor comes round mine for dinner I'll invite you over to call him a 'total prick' tho !

You wanna stretch this thread to cover UFC etc ?

I much prefer boxing... there's a certain purity and aesthetic value to the sweet science. And a greater strategic element (or at least, a different kind of strategic thinking).

I consider boxing to be a sport, and UFC/MMA as a fight under controlled conditions. Of course the UFC fighters would be much more handy in a real fight, it would like asking a ping pong player to play Novak Djokovic at tennis.

There has been some talk of boxer Vs UFC. McGregor was trying to tempt a fight with Mayweather, which I can't see Floyd ever going for. But Amir Khan has shown some interest.

Interestingly, the McGregor Vs Diaz fight (won by McGregor) was won with punches. Diaz is the much better ground fighter, so when McGregor got him down he stood back and let him up (about 3 times) because he knew if he got down there with him he'd have been in trouble. He is an accurate striker though.

But yeah, I prefer boxing in several ways.

It's interesting isn't it ?

I guess for me they're all different styles with rules appropriate to each style.

I still recommend anyone to see the Heather Hardy v Shelly Vincent contest, propa bangin'. Two women who don't need to worry about getting mugged.

On another note Canelo has said he's moving up to MW after the Liam Smith (LMW) fight.

If he does, I would expect he fights a MW for his belt (or a good MW such as David Limeux) then fights GGG.

He's getting so much bad press for not fighting GGG he's almost obliged to now.

The rumoured McGregor/Mayweather fight would have been boxing rules... so would not even be competitive.

Amir Khan - the utter bell-end - is actually talking about competing in MMA. Despite no background whatsoever. Wish he's just shut his mouth and get on with his job.

Between pricks and bellends I'd have thought you boxing fans and that other thing I can't relate to, would understand getting publicity is an important aspect if fighters want to make money. They're almost obliged to be the aforementioned. Mind you Khan never appears offensive to me.

So in the early hours of tomorrow Sergey Kovalev fights Andre Ward at LHW.

Regardles of belts, it's a potentially great fight, for several reasons. The skillsets of both are impeccable. The skillsets of both have major differences. Both have proved their abilities several times over.

Kovalev said some months ago that he'd like to fight Ward to see if he could beat him and to grade himself against a great boxer. That's a very humble way of looking at it, but I think it also shows the SK knows Ward is hard to beat, regardless of how hard you can punch. Ward can take away a boxer's punch, after that what has the opponent got left ?

I want Kovalev to win, but Ward has a way of stealing rounds and messing your play.

So brain says Ward wins.

Who do you think wins ?

It's a huge mistake IMO.

I'm not sure who would want to watch him, anyway. Yes he was very good, but Froch 1 was his only win against top level opposition. He's been out of the ring for four years.. older, slower, less stamina. He wouldn't be competitive against James Degale or Badou Jack.

    • Labour was right not to increase fuel duty - it's not just motorists it affects, but goods transport. Fuel goes up, inflation goes up. Inflation will go up now anyway, and growth will stagnate, because businesses will pass the employee NIC hikes onto customers.  I think farms should be exempt from the 20% IHT. I don't know any rich famers, only ones who work their fingers to the bone. But it's in their blood and taking that, often multi-generation, legacy out of the family is heart-breaking. Many work to such low yields, and yet they'll often still bring a lamb to the vet, even if the fees are more than the lamb's life (or death) is worth. Food security should be made a top priority in this country. And, even tho the tax is only for farms over £1m, that's probably not much when you add it all up. I think every incentive should be given to young people who want to take up the mantle.
