BT phone cable theft

Recommended Posts

I've had no landline since early yesterday evening. According to BT, this is due to theft of some cable around here. I know of one other neighbour affected. I've been told that they can't guarantee a return to full service until next Monday, but they will divert your calls to another number if you ask them.

Theft of (copper) cable is a real issue when scrap values are so high, and dealers still offer a 'no questions asked' response to those selling scrap to them (despite the fact they are meant to keep records)

Hi InTexas - I don't know how it works, but my phone lines are dead yet my broadband (BT infinity) has been working fine throughout. Presumably the broadband cables weren't nicked...even though broadband uses the same socket as the phone...as I say, all a mystery to me.

could our landlines be affected by the fault but our broadband - BT infinity - be unaffected

BT Infinity is supplied (if memory serves) via 'fibre to the cabinet' - that is, only the final local loop (from the last main flexibility point to your house) is delivered over the old copper twisted pair. For such a short run copper can carry a great deal of information. Other fibre options are fibre to the curb and fibre to the premise - this latter generally only a business option. I am not sure, but I believe voice services are still carried over copper - so if the cable cut/ stolen sits on the exchange side of the cabinet (most likely since that's where the thick cables are) then it is possible that your fibre connexion will still be intact, but the copper cable carrying voice will be lost. Hence you will still have internet/ broadband but not the 'phone' (i.e. voice) services. Depending on where the optical fibre is run (it normally shares duct with the copper cable) it may, or may not, be disrupted when the copper cable is stolen. Where the duct is accidently damaged by other works this can take out both copper and fibre of course. I do not believe (happy to be corrected) that those with BT Infity also get packetised voice services, thus putting all traffic over the optical fibre.

If you have the BT SmartTalk ap on your mobile you may still be able to make outgoing 'voice' calls at your PSTN tariff from home, using VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) - but you will not be able to receive calls over your landline until the cable is restored. You will also be able to make calls using something like Skype from any piece of kit running that (desktop, laptop, mobile, pad etc.)

I too have no phone but my broadband is fine. When I contacted BT yesterday they said it must be a fault inside my home and would send an engineer as there were no issues with the network locally (despite their website fault reporting page telling me there were issues). Are the other posters still without phone service?

    • I did wonder if the original post was a joke, given the reference to discussing "interesting things" without giving any clue as to what his interests actually were .... Maybe he is just sitting back and quietly laughing at the responses 😥 However, many moons ago, we used to have fairly regular "Forum Drinks", where forum members could meet up and get to know each other in real life. We met in a different local pub each time, and sometimes had sticky labels with our forum names on. A lot of those original people have moved away, but it has occasionally crossed my mind that it would be nice to start that up again and be able to put more faces to names (not that I ever remember either faces OR names)  Or maybe it is still happening but I'm kept out of the loop 🤣  Many of those pubs we used to go to have now changed out of all recognition, of course. Also there seem to be more families with young children in the area, for whom evening drinks would be difficult. I don't have time to do it, but if anybody else was up for organising it I'd be happy to help. It mainly involves deciding on a date, I imagine trying to get a rough idea of how many people would be interested,  and then booking a suitable sized space in a local pub and telling people about it on here  I don't know how it was arranged before, but maybe some of the longer standing forum users may know. I just used to turn up!
    • Yup, it's 15 year project (I think some elements of it started a year or so ago).  Imagine how annoyed Earl will be when they find out that the new Teaco superstore planned has underground parking for 530 cars....
    • It should have been Thistles, but it was actually Thistells or something, much to my irritation! When it was Le Chardon it was French food I think. If memory serves, the manager was French, and the food was good, but you sometimes had to wait a very long time for it. That must have been in the nineties?  The thistle/chardon  reference was because years and years ago it was a David Greigs, and their logo (probably not called a logo in those days) was a thistle. The room still had (can't remember if it still has, I've only been to Kartuli twice) the original old David Greig tiles on the wall, some with thistles on them. My memory is getting muddled. Before Kartuli, was it there where some poor people tried to open something and everything went wrong? I vaguely remember flooding, and/or a gas leak? And then Covid? Am I mixing it up with somewhere else along that stretch? I don't remember Franklins ever being SE22. When was that?
