Jah Lush
Although it's probably 20 years since I read it, have you tried George Orwell's Homage To Catalonia Mockney? Ant
I loved Timolean Vieta Come Home. Mrs A felt cheated by the ending, but I enjoyed it. (Does that make me evil?) Asset
I liked that book too although I'm such a sap I cried at the end Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/467-what-is-east-dulwich-reading-today/page/6/#findComment-16931 Share on other sites
Bellenden Belle
I cried at the end of Timolean Vieta come home too - I felt absolute shock at the ending, which is why I think I had such a strong reaction.I read his new book "Gold" a couple of weeks back - it didn't quite match Timolean but did have some wonderful moments. mockney piers
I did indeed Jah Lush/TT. I always thought Tierra Y Libertad was An Homage To An Homage To Catalonia. Also noticed the room was a just a little bit dusty during the Internacional at granddad's funeral. TillieTrotter
Thats a good idea Capt. Why dont we all bring a couple of books on the EDF nights out for abit of a swap shop. TillieTrotter
Just to bring this one up top again. What do you think of a book swap shop at the next EDF drink. Serves a few purposes in that newcomers will recognise a table laden with books, it could be an ice-breaker(although in my experience one isnt needed), and we all go home with a little treat. citizenED
This is a great idea - I will bring something i've recently read. So that will be "Spot's Day Out", "The Gruffolo" or "We are Going on a Bear Hunt". On second thoughts I'll bring something I read in a previous life.citizen Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/467-what-is-east-dulwich-reading-today/page/6/#findComment-18014 Share on other sites

SimonM
>>Is anyone here a re-reader? SimonM
oh and, (madly replying to myself), for a book that can be read once and only once I'd suggest "Portnoy's Complain">:D Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/467-what-is-east-dulwich-reading-today/page/6/#findComment-18034 Share on other sites
lorraineliyanage
I recently finished reading The Contortionist's Handbook by Craig Clevenger. If you enjoyed The Dice Man then this is probably a book for you! Now reading The Hammer of the God's (Led Zeppelin biography) but not really enjoying it that much as I'm not a big fan of their music! Asset
I read The Contortionists Handbook recently - liked it.Reading Bob Dylan Chronicles - bit random and all over the place - not really into it but never been a huge fan of his (cue tirade probably) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/467-what-is-east-dulwich-reading-today/page/6/#findComment-18128 Share on other sites
Jah Lush
Nah! I read Chronicles last year and thought it was really interesting reading it through Dylan's eyes. capt_birdseye
Hammer of the Gods was a real let down. I thought it was meant to be really controversial, it just came across as one man with his tongue firmly inserted inside Jimmy Page's rusty sheriff's badge.Scar Tissue by Anthony Kiedis is well worth a go though. I must say I'm quite tempted by a previous poster's suggestion of that Rolling Stones Exile on Main Street era biog. Jah Lush
Yeah, it's good Captain. But if you love the Stones like I do then I can also recommend the following: True Adventures of the Rolling Stones by Stanley Booth and Stones Touring Party by Robert Frank about the `72 tour. capt_birdseye
I love the Stones from Beggars Banquet to Exile on Main Street. Stuff beforehand is alright, stuff afterwards is no good to me. Exile on Main Street is one of my all time favourite albums, just behind Cheeky Girls vol 1. Asset
I just read the Tony Visconti autobiography and although I am a big fan of the main person he worked with - Bowie - came away from the book thinking Visconti was a bit of a prat and that I didn't really like him. Interesting read though. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/467-what-is-east-dulwich-reading-today/page/6/#findComment-18292 Share on other sites
Ant
Anyone ever read anything by Peter Tinniswood? I'm really enjoying that series of his that they're playing on BBC 7 at the moment - Winston, I think it's called - and I know he wrote some books, but that's all I know. Would be interested to learn more.
