Aha, the old 'too far away to bother' line.

I need hardly add that the 7/7 bombers were educated on the subcontinent, and that you can leave India after you've gone to bed and arrive in the UK before you wake up.

The UK invests around GBP 300m a year of your tax money in India, quite sensibly - given that it represents one sixth of the world's population (1.1 billion citizens). The UK doesn't make anything itself any more (we don't have any resources) so we are utterly reliant on our international relations to keep the bread on your table. Our trade with India last year was US$9.8 billion, and we are the world's second largest Indian trading partner.

Tragically, 'who gives a shit?' today turns to 'why is there no food?' tomorrow, and 'why are we going to war?' the day after.

I wonder what is the appropriate sentiment to express on here..? Apart from Jimbob's lack of interest, I would imagine most of us are horrified and wondering about the motivation and what can be done (that said, I haven't seen a paper yet this morning so I don't know what new has come to light). I just wouldn't think to come on here solely to share my grief. Perhaps I'm unusual in that.

But as bon3yard was (I think) pointing out rather more pithily than me, Mumbai is not the only international crisis (Christ, what's an appropriate word?) missing its own thread.

It is of course absolutely shocking but it's hard to know what to say.

Though I totally agree with Nick that what goes on in the subcontinent is of course of interest and concern to all of us, after an event like this it would seem mawkish and inappropriate to come on somewhere like here and say something like 'my thoughts...' or somesuch.

I remember at the time of the London bombs lot of people coming on some of the flickr forums which should really only be about long exposure techniques or somesuch and saying something like 'my prayers go out to y'all in London, England' to which I just thought, well, frankly, fuck off!

That's an interesting point though Piers. When someone gets killed in a car accident or something, threads are started on here, and everyone says "my thoughts are with the family" and stuff like that. Now I'm sure they mean it, but if I was a part of that family, I'd want to come on here and say mind your fecking business and leave us be!

Guess different people express things differently, but I'm sure all those prayers were genuine, even if they didn't really help anyone.

    • If you speak to the reception you should be able to get a free gym induction as part of your membership. Not enough people actually get guidence on how to use the equipment properly and therefore either don't get the best out of it or injure themselves. After the refurb I booked an induction so I learnt how to adjust the new equipment because despite attending there for about 10years I was used to the old machines and equipment and at my age (64) I really did'nt want to faff around not knowing how adjust things correctly. As regards advance booking classes I know for sure you used to be able to book a class 10days in advance but not sure about 2 weeks. Good luck in the gym!
    • Wtf. The word in Greek is the “n” word for Black women. Why would someone open a business under this name? People should boycott instead of commenting on food.
    • Good on you for doing something rather than some who would prefer to complain about what others are doing.  Enjoyed the read and look forward to seeing more of the meals from the area.   There's are some great substack newsletters out there for local news and exploration. Love to see it.
