New speed humps are proliferating all over the borough, increasingly now on bus routes. Two more have just been introduced at the junction of Peckham Rye and Barry Road, and on the pedestrian crossing on Peckham Rye a little way further down. This means every bus on these busy routes has to bounce their passengers over these obstacles, adding to discomfort, slowing them down still further and adding to wear and tear on the vehicles. How many people think this is a benefit?

Lol Kilmore, I don't think it's supposed to be a benefit to the buses - I think it's been proven a benefit to road-safety. Sort of Kil-less....

...I 'll get my coat.

You can check out hundreds of test results cited here, or just take the results of their own 5 year controlled test - a 50% reduction in child injuries.

There are those who believe that the death of children on our streets is not too high a price to pay if we can reduce wear and tear, and provide smoother journeys at higher speeds. I'm just not one of them ;-)

Huguenot, your stats are from the US, so they don't really count. Nor does the 'think of the children line'. Your kids shouldn't be playing on a bus route anyway.

But those 'tabletop' humps Kilmore is referring too aren't so bad on the back, it's the cushions and sleeping policemen that cause trouble: they delay ambulances, dismount cyclists and motorbikers; render cars unroadworthy and cause motorists to swerve in order to straddle the darn things.

They have put a speed bump in the road outside my house. When the bus hits it (without slowing down at all because it is before its first stop so there are no passengers) it make my whole house shake.

Yeah so thanks you fucking cunts! My life is really pleasant now with a house that shakes at regular intervals throughout the night.

I had the same problem when I lived on the edge of Brockwell Park. Lorries and Buses used to hit the raised crossing at full speed, resulting in an almightly crashing sound.

Tell drivers to slow down? You mad? Civil liberties, Big Brother, blah de blah.

No, the answer, apparantly, is to get rid of any hinderance that might impinge on the driving experience.

This is my first post so welcome all. I just wanted to say that the more speed bumps on Barry Road the better. I live on Barry Road and by crossing it I put my life in God's hands. People just bomb down it. Not long ago we were awaken bright and early cos a car looking to get out of Upland got smashed by some guy doing 90 on Barry. Result, two cars flew towards Barry's off license. By complete luck no one was anywhere near or they would have perished. Not even that little squirt who stands around on the corner of Upland and Barry bumming fags!

Yeah, thats going to happen. Hi, TonyQuinn, I think one of the most worrying things about driving down Barry Road is drivers overtaking the 12 Bus (or anything else for that matter) double white lines all the way down that magical mile I say.

Kford, what utter b*llocks. Utter utter b*llocks.

The US is too far away is it? They have different types of cars? Their weird accent means their children bounce off bonnets differently?

What about Birmingham, is that too far away? Richmond? Peckham?

I'm staggered that grown-ups make up such ridiculous excuses to carry on killing kids. How embarassing.

Regardless of that frankly unimaginative challenge, I'll help you gain some clarity by referring to the 50 odd studies referenced at the bottom of that article, many of which are from the UK.

I still love you though. :)

I?m not a fan of speed bumps. They?re annoying and they fuck your car up. If nobody drove like a dick we wouldn?t need them. The thing is people don?t realise how dangerous the way they drive can actually be. I have a way to remedy this. People who drive like knobs are pulled over and shot in the face. I guarantee that after about a month road deaths will be down significantly (Death by shooting may be up slightly). Unfortunately the knobs vote too* so we can?t just go shooting people for being generally useless. So for now speed bumps it will have to be I suppose.

I?m thinking of getting into politics can anyone recommend a party?

*As an aside do you ever look around you and think that democracy is wasted on humanity?

Road bumps cause accidents too - or rather the idiot car drivers who they are aimed at - because the car drivers will swerve to avoid them and not bother to realise they are aiming straight for another car/bike/cyclist. When first road bumps were placed in roads, Southwark was amongst many councils who said they will never be placed in bus routes. Really, they did say that. They had their very good reasons for that. Those reasons have now disappeared so Southwark KNOW they are causing problems but still putting them in. It's about safety and you can not legislate against stupid people who drive dangerously. Drivers/riders are taught to plan ahead when learning to ride, to see the obstacle ahead and drive accordingly. Off topic a bit - I just argued against the cycle lane in Peckham Rye Park East because it will give bad car drivers the go ahead to carry on driving badly since the nice council got rid of the pesky cyclists that keep slowing them down!

It's not about traffic angering measures road humps chicanes bumps humps and tables - it should be about concentrating on the minority who drive dangerously who you can not legislate against. I object strongly to having to pay for the dangerous and stupid actions of a few. And so say all of us!

My dear Gatecrasher. You misunderstand me. I think Operation Ivy summed it up best when they said:

The position being taken

Is not to be mistaken

For attempted education

Or righteous accusation

Only a description

Just an observation

Of the pitiful condition

Of our degeneration
