Most airlines take them in the hold for free. Definitely get a case tho, as our set was damaged on one flight and the airline was awful about replacing it, and told us we would have to use their battered, questionably safe "replacement" while they investigated the damage to ours...
We bought a lightweight britAx (toddler) seat for travelling-it has been damaged recently but has been on many flights. It was cheaper than buying a decent case, and with all the luggage was easier to transport. It also means our main sear is still in perfect condition for no2. It's also handy for if a pal comes over, and fits with a belt. You can get wrapping done at lots of the airports.
