Driving instructor for refresher lessons

Hi gang,

I haven't been driving for a few years and I have never driven a car in the UK. Most of my driving was in scandinavia, so I have never driven on the left side of the road. Now I am thinking of getting a car, but I think I need to take a couple of driving lessons, both to get back into the groove but perhaps more importantly to get used to driving in London.

If anyone has got a local driving instructor that they could recommend that would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

I did this about 15yrs ago after a long gap between passing my test and then having my own car to drive. I can't remember the name of the school - sorry - but I found it to be a pretty standard service that most driving schools offer. Just take a note down of the cars you see in your local area and give them a ring if no-one can offer a specific recommendation.

You can apply for a free 2 hour lesson with the AA driving school - oops just seen it's so popular that it's temporarily suspended, but it's worth keeping an eye out for it. I did it (couldn't get an automatic hire car abroad so needed a manual refresher lesson) and it was excellent....

Hi, I have just completed a driving refresher course after a loss of confidence over the last 2 years following a collision with a 40 ton left hand drive lorry on the A14. Surviving the accident was a miracle but the thought of it happening again left me very anxious. I went out with a local instructor who does 2 1/2 hour sessions. We went on various busy South London streets in order encounter all sorts of traffic and out onto the A21 and M25 to get used to the lorries and speed. I needed 3 sessions to regain my confidence, but if you haven't been traumatised by an accident, I would think one session at ?75. would be worth it. I can recommend Nick Pauli, of Nicholas Driving Academy.SE22. M 07956 221706. I chose to use my own car, so he had to trust me as well as me trust him, as he didn't have the dual control.

Hope this helps and good luck.

    • I've just moved into the area and needed some help getting rid of endless packaging and boxes following our move. I called AFA waste and they came within 15 minutes. Very friendly, efficient and helpful, and a decent quote too. I'd highly recommend them.
    • I dunno man  no political party is going to be formed of people on the street, tapped on the shoulder, and asked “do you want to run the country? You’ll have to be elected and give up a lot for not a huge amount of money - fancy it?” political parties - grown up ones anyway - will be a self-selecting wonkish bunch.  I’m ok with that.  Doesn’t make them “elite” I often think English people just love nothing more than to suffer.  And complain about suffering.  But like it really.
    • It depends how you define 'Metropolitan Elite'. The cabinet is heavily skewed to the Oxbridge-educated, to lawyers, and particularly to those who went straight from university into think tanks or parliamentary and union researcher posts. It's a long way from being representative of the workforce in general. There's very little private sector experience, but that's probably a good thing given the misadventures of Reevesy and Haigho when they dipped their toes in it. It is an improvement on the 'Public School & PPE at Oxford' Tory cabal, but still smacks of a political class well removed from the electorate.  It's got four members who are related to prominent Labour figures, past and present. It's still very much an 'Elite'. 19 out of 22 in the cabinet represent either a constuency in a Metropolitan county (England's six largest cities) or one in another large city. One is in the House of Lords. One is in Brighton & Hove. The other represents Swindon, which is about as close as you'll get to a proper city in Wiltshire - I'm disregarding Old Sarum. You're not even allowed to take your pig into a pub in Swindon, elsewhere in Wiltshire you probably won't get in without one. Believe me, I've tried. The cabinet really couldn't be more 'Metropolitan'. Even the stench of Rayner's chips & gravy isn't enough to cover the whiff of the seven-vegetable tagine suppers.
