Where do you buy fabric?

I am doing a project and need a good amount of fabric

But don't want to spend loads

Where do you buy your fabric?

Probably need a light upholstery fabric plus advice on needleweight!

A little bit further afield, but I really like Fabrics Galore on Lavender Hill in Clapham. I used them last year to source some upholstery fabric and the choice was great. I also have a friend who's into quilting and she uses them all the time.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Due to to high likelihood of messing it up I've bought calico (!!!!) but will feel braver next time I'm sure!
