Hagrid
any puppy will normally like cats particularly if they are brought into a home with them and grow up next to them. Cats are quite clever they will normally stay out of the dogs way unless they take a shine to them. Bigger dogs such a labs and retrievers etc will normally always be ok, sometimes terriers can chase cats but not normally if they are socialised early enough. Hope this helps. timwed
Thanks Hagrid.. I really like Jack Russells.. But from what I've read online they are to be avoided, along with most terriers.. So kind of confused Maybe terriers to be avoided then? Thanks for the advice Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/45346-good-dog-breed-to-have-with-cats/#findComment-753876 Share on other sites
carolb
We have a Jack Russell and three cats. Cats were already with us when he arrived as a puppy and he is now two years old. They all get along fine.Carol Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/45346-good-dog-breed-to-have-with-cats/#findComment-753879 Share on other sites
timwed
ah ok.. maybe a jack russell is a possible then.. there is so many conflicting opinions and seeing as the cats came first and are very much loved i want to avoid making a wrong decision Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/45346-good-dog-breed-to-have-with-cats/#findComment-753890 Share on other sites
aquarius moon
A lot of terriers are born with the instinct to chase.Personally I would go for a Cavalier King Charles spaniel as they get on with most things & are really laid back. timwed
thanks for the advice asquarius moon.. a laid back dog is just what i'd like.. i'm sure if my cats could talk they'd agree Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/45346-good-dog-breed-to-have-with-cats/#findComment-753914 Share on other sites
Mustard
CKC spaniels have too many health problems. It's too risky to get one of them. Have a look at the Pedigree Exposed Dogs website. You might find that the cats don't take to the dog. I have had cats and dogs, and my last cat was there before the dog came, he never liked her, but she loved him. Have your cats ever met a dog before? Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/45346-good-dog-breed-to-have-with-cats/#findComment-754006 Share on other sites
PokerTime
My family has a jack russel and a cat and they are fine. The cat came first. I'd also recommend Border Collies too. They are fantastic and intelligent dogs, but also agree with what most are saying above, that most puppies will be fine with a cat. timwed
thanks Mustard and Pokertime.. my neighbour has an Alastian and they don't seem too bothered by him.. plus we get foxes in the garden and i've seen one of the cats take a swipe at a fox so i don't really think a pup would massively phase them..i got them from a rescue centre as kittens and there was dogs at the centre as welljust want to make sure i get the right balance with chosen breed.. i'm swaying towards a miniture schnauzer as a friend has one and says it loves his cats.. anyone have an opinion on schnauzers?also will check out the Pedigree Exposed Dogs site Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/45346-good-dog-breed-to-have-with-cats/#findComment-754042 Share on other sites

Robert Poste's Child
I know someone with a bigger schnauzer and a cat and they were fine even when shut up in a confined space together. Again, the cat was already established when the dog arrived as a puppy so she trained him. timwed
thanks RPC.. i'm thinking a smaller dog than a large.. maybe when i eventually move to the sticks i'll get something bigger.. in the meantime the mini schnauzer is looking like the one Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/45346-good-dog-breed-to-have-with-cats/#findComment-754143 Share on other sites
Mustard
Mini schnauzers are everywhere nowadays. Not sure why, as they have a hideous high pitched bark. My cousins had a slew of them, one after the other, well before they became popular, and the barking was unbearable. Mustard
Maltese and Bichons are good with cats, or you could get a cross like a Maltipoo, or Bichpoo but be sure to research their health testing as they should have had some if responsibly bred. Seabag
I had an English Bull terrier and a Doberman (rescue dog) and a catThe cat ruled the roost, make of that what you will. In fact the cat would often sleep on the dogs in their basket. Mustard
Princess Anne had an EBT that killed one of the Queen's corgis and also attacked another dog in a park. Think the Princess had to make a court appearance about the attack on the other dog.Don't get a lurcher type dog, or greyhound or whippet as they usually have a huge prey drive. LadyDeliah
My 5 year old staff cross adopted two kittens whose mum had died when they were 5-6 weeks old. He cleaned their bums and they slept in his bed. Here they are when the cat was grown up. They are still really good together.Bull breeds have a bad rep, but they are really good pets and cool with other animals. KidKruger
We have a recently (2 mths) arrived 4yr old lurcher cross and he's getting his head around the fact that the 2 cats are not food, but household members just like him. Mustard
I know a rehomed racing greyhound who has killed both a puppy and cat and is local to this area. Now wears a muzzle. thankfully. Would find it very stressful worrying about having dog prone to such things. They will also kill squirrels in the parks. But, the gardeners of the parks seem to like that as they don't like the squirrels digging up their bulbs.
