New HEAD CHEF started at THE CHERRY TREE!!!!

Just to be clear, plenty of people have said negative things about the Vale that are not connected (directly at least) with relationships between management and ever changing staff i.e. rubbish beer selection, boring food (other than the short periods when they've had someone really trying in the kitchen) and zero atmosphere. Tbh it feels like a throwback to London pubs in the 80s, and not in a good way. The whole saga of staff turning up all keen and then leaving in despair has been so much of a soap opera tho' that inevitably its in the forefront of people's minds. I don't care - I didn't know any of them - but imho the Vale is just a rubbish boozer.

Also if the owners did put anything on here they would be ripped to bits like anyone else from the Cherry Tree..

Even the chef put a post up and with in 5 min he was ripped to bit and not one of you know the guy ,,,

I think its very sad that this happens.

So that is a categoric "I am not pokertime" from you djkq?

Djblair. No one is having a pop at the new chef. Quite the opposite. Good luck to him etc. BUT. if he cared to look at what happened to his predecessors, he might be able to save himself some hassle

Hahahaha, not even mildly convincing.

Okay, even if you are spot on about this, there is a difference between bar managers like Chris & Antonia, and a chef. The Chef may decide he doesn't fancy it after working there for a while, but it's very unlikely he's been made wild promises.

Are you able to separate that whole debacle from the ongoing revolving door of manager and chefs?

It?s also worth noting that when new managers or chefs do start posting on here, the style is always very similar:

Exclamation marks

Over optimism

No attempt to speak to past problems and why people might have an issue with the place

Why, it?s almost as if ?somebody else? is telling them what and how to do it

Or it could all be a coincidence

I mean - the last chef - you all remember, the superb American chef

what happened with him? Anyone know? Anyone find it odd that he was so good and lasted just weeks?

I've gone back and read previous threads now, and can confirm that as long as Tony & Gary are running the joint, certain posters won't give it a chance whatever happens.

Right or wrong? Dunno really, they've clearly upset people and treated staff badly in the past.

But I just don't dig this whole "we're warning the innocents" vibe.

I've never been in this place. Nothing to do with threads on here.. it just looks abysmal from the outside.

I haven't noticed other 'rejuvenated' local drinking holes (eg The Great Exhibition / sorry, Otta - the CPT) on here, desperately begging for business on a regular basis - under a different *HEY GUYS - ALL NEW* guise every time.

It something's any good, people just start going. Then more people start going.

And it doesn't need constantly fixing, because it isn't constantly broke.

"Clearly not no, but they're all grown ups who can decide for themselves!"

the whole chris/antonia thing suggests it's not as simple as that.

If we are to believe them (and having spoken at length with them during and after, I certainly do) then how Gary & co treat people has a serious impact on their lives

On that particular couple who apparently gave up other work and made a home in the area to come and do the job, yes.

They are the only ones that we heard from after it had gone wrong (as far as I'm aware). We never heard from Ryan, or the American Chef etc, so we don't know.

I dunno man, you seem REALLY REALLY in to this. When I did a search for cherry tree earlier I noticed that when a former poster who has moved popped back to the forum to say hello and ask what had been going on, from all the things you could have said, you chose to tell him that managers and chefs come and go from the cherry tree and that "we" try to warn them.

Is this your new mission in life?

My big question is, do you think that threads like this do ANYTHING at all to actually help these people whilst they are working there? Because all I can see them doing is keeping custom away and ensuring that these "innocents" don't stand a chance.

If I was the owner(s) I'd contact admin and ask that there be absolutely NO mention of my business on the forum (and ensure that my staff didn't start threads) much like the owner of that crappy cakeshop with the posh french light fitting did.

This forum and The Cherry Tree are never going to be happy bed fellows.

It's partly historical... Back to the days when you used to complain about them when they barred you and the invention of NTV acronym

Despite the last ten years plus where all the pubs in dulwich evolved and changed, that place has exactly the same problems

We know the owners read the forum, and I hold some hope that they can see that we can see through their transparent "we are different now" promises

If they are being unfairly maligned, it should be easy to engage, just as other businesss have on here, and go "you wouldn't believe the bad luck we've had with staff and here's what we plan to do"

If the business fails it's odd that you think some comments on a local forum near the brunt of responsibility and not abysmal management

Advocating censorship seems weird as well.

There was also a point when is tried to swim against the tide and support the place. I started going regularly, got to know some of them a tiny bit and I tried to get others to go. I feel like a patsy for falling for it

That said, when people started to insult the owners for how the looked I stood up against that too. So I don't think I'm historically completely opposed to the place. But watching people try and defend them when I know what they do irks me

Sometimes people have a bad rep for a genuine reason

They don't have any legal right to stop discussion on the forum. Le Chandelier tried that but can no longer threaten action against the forum. They can I believe take civil action against individual posters.

The Cherry Tree sounds like it's had a rough ride, probably because of the owners. The proof of the pudding though etc. we went in for a drink a couple of weeks ago to try it. Pretty unatmospheric - that's all I can say about the place.

    • Now it can be true that it will be easy to find people who believe either of those things, that doesn't make both those things true  Objectively - a situation is handled very differently by two different governments. If some people decide to say "proof they are all the same" then we should be pointing out that that is wrong - not hand waving it away as something that people can choose to believe or not believe If the people who want to believe "they are all the same" have some better idea - eg Reform? - then they will have to have to explain how that party is packed with criminals so how does that improve things. "They are all the same" is usually code for "I don't really want to think about anything, I just want what I want" that, and whilst I find him infuriating in many matters, I can't see Starmer of all people reversing this decision.
    • That was certainly par for the course under the previous Gov, but Labour has a lot of very keen/ambitious MPs so I think she'll probably have to wait her turn...
