Sorry - this made me laugh, as opposed to stairs that only go up or down??!!

y'knowworrimean

when you went into that building (and adjacent buildings have/had similar layouts, but are different types of business) but you walked in and were met with some stairs immediately, you then had a few steps of "mezzanine" and then there more steps down to a huge cavernous space which may or may not have contained people

It wasn't a very convivial space through no fault of the owners - but it looks like FM will be flattening it all out which wil lbe a big improvement no?

Agree 100% about the service in the EDD. Such a shame. RW have always been fine with me.

Yes, the Kiwi lady makes a superb sausage roll. I tried the ED Deli ones but they were too meaty. Too much sausage and not enough roll for me. I'm intrigued by the scotch egg stall.

I am sorry to see them go. I only shopped there once a week to get some delicious treats or gorgeous ham; in fact it was expensive shop, however often I was offered free second loaf of bread when I was buying one. I have never experienced any rudeness from the staff. I found them quite cheerful often singing along to some funky tunes in the shop. I will definitely miss them!

I agree about the ED Deli sausage rolls. Too much sausage (and not very meaty sausage at that).

yep - good olives, herbs, tomatoes, lemons, garlic and all kinds of stuff down the back - even the ED Deli would direct people over there if they didn't have what a customer wanted but ED Supermarket did.

I've shopped there a fair bit since they opened and found the staff to be generally helpful and friendly. It's a shame they got a reputation for being rude as you can't afford to get a bad reputation now that there is so much competition, although I do wonder that some people never use a store again after one bad experience (although I did the same with Oliver Bonas so maybe I shouldn't judge others!).

Their take-away lasagne and quiches were great and I was partial to their goats cheese and beetroot salad. At one time, their cakes were excellent (if not particularly cheap). When they first opened, they sold the best ice cream in East Dulwich.

I frequently had their 'two for the price of one' bread at the end of the day, which usually stayed fresh for a couple of days.

As others have said, I just hope that what replaces them IS as improvement.

across the road from the ed deli - fruit and veg outside, is another deli, good breads, cheesecake, salami, olives, stuffed vine etc,and not half as expensive, been there for years.

Lets hope ED property is not yet another estate agent or over the top up itself "wine bar/eating house/gastro gastly get over yourself drinking place"

I thought Jay the Manager was brilliant. He knew his stuff, and was very helpful and had a great sense of humour . I also think Tony the owner is a great chap.

I was there when it first opened and think it's a huge shame that it's closed.

I wish Jay and Tony all the best for the future.

    • Hi everyone, we are trying to finslise our decision for enrolling our son for 3+ from September and currently considering Dulwich Prep or Herne Hill. We like both and appreciate there is no right or wrong answer but what we like about HH is great focus on early years and also being coed. However if we can avoid the 7+ stress then prefer to do that. Dulwich Prep is closer but the difference is not significant. we know children are very active and busy in DP and they have great facilities, but unlike HH, we don’t know much about their focus on personal development and emotional intelligence, etc! Also not sure about long-term impact of being in boys only school. Difficult decision for us and we appreciate feedback from parents if you can share please.    thank you
    • Yeah that was their old policy. Their new policy is to force you to have a water meter and if you refuse they put you on a punitively high tariff which effectively forces you to have one. I was doing well with my policy of polite resistance which was to say yes fine I'll have one fitted but then not actually book an appointment or cancel the appointments they made. But then I was persuaded that it would be much cheaper anyway.
    • Lots of lovely lilac shrubs in flower at the moment. Would anyone consider giving me a cutting? It would involve digging out a basal off shoot, roots and all. I'd love one for my new garden but I'm so broke that I have to fill it with plants the slow way!
    • You are welcome to have mine for free. I was just about to post! Three panels - 6ft by 5ft - weathered/natural on one side and painted brown on the other.
