rjakavic
We're considering a move to Brockley. We're currently renting in Herne Hill but can't afford what we want here. Does this forum include the Brockley area? Does anyone have any views on Brockley as an area? Would appreciate your opinions... healey
Probably very similar in price to be honest, especially in the conservation area.Less of a high street, but some lovely houses. NewWave
If I'm honest I find it a bit drab and dull as an area. The fact its in zone two makes it sound better than it is.I'd recommend Forest Hill on the East Dulwich side rather than Brockley. Loz
And you'll have to put up with all the broccoli jokes. Which, I suppose, still makes it marginally better than Nunhead. Applespider
The Brockley market is good especially if you're a foodie. There's a brewery and a cheesemaker in Brockley too.If you plan on taking the train in rush hour, be aware that the trains can be very very busy by the time they get to Brockley and you may be trying to squeeze into a carriage. Fabhat
I work in Brockley - and lived there til Sept - now moved to Ladywell. I think it's a great area, but getting v expensive for housing. The brockley central blog is a font of local knowledge and gossip - worth looking on there...http://brockleycentral.blogspot.co.ukGood luck! alaska721
I recently moved from Camberwell to the Crofton Park area of Brockley and I absolutely love the area. You definitely get more for your money in SE4 but prices are getting ridiculous round here too. There's definitely an overspill coming from Dulwich (I was initially looking to move to East Dulwich myself) and open days seem to be the norm at house viewings. The area, which seems to be full of young families, has plenty of green space (Blythe Hill, Hilly Fields, Ladywell) and has plenty of decent primary schools (although my daughter goes to school in Herne Hill at the moment). For entertainment the Jam Circus is a fantastic bar with good food, pub quiz, live bands etc. During the day it's family friendly but in the evening can get quite busy.I'm lucky where I am because I'm a 5 minute walk from Crofton Park train station and a 10 minute walk from both Honor Oak and Brockley station so I've got quite a choice of different train/overground lines. Otta
Houses are very nice but I always found it a bit dull. It's kind of an area between areas, bit like Honour Oak.That's just my opinion. MrBen
I've just been living there for 3 weeks. Its really convenient for getting into town. The station is great with the overground and Southern trains are only 2 stops from London Bridge. They do seem busier than the ED line in though.Agree there are some great period houses and flats on tree lined streets that are much larger than anything you'll find in East Dulwich. Walk up steps. Like a NY brownstone.Main downside? Lack of a decent high street. Lots of cheap takeaways, nail bars but only 1-2 decent places you'd want to eat in, The Gantry being one. ponderwoman
If you are interested in art, you may get a useful insight to the area and some of its residents in the Open Studios week the first week of July. Many long term residents who love it. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/44559-brockley/#findComment-748826 Share on other sites
Seabag
I have a workspace in Brockley and to be honest I wasn't initially thrilled about being thereBut, it's been really pleasant. Yes the shops are a little odd, weird/dull. However, there's a good comunity of people there and housing stock is goodI'd move there now especially as its changing for the betterBrowns of BrockleyBrockley MarketThe GantryThe little Yellow Caribbean placeGood transportThe Chinese take away/eat in restaurant is run by a sweet coupleIt's near to Deptford, which i've been exploring too. It's rough and ready in places but still interesting Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/44559-brockley/#findComment-749681 Share on other sites
malumbu
Unlike East Dulich it is served by a useful railway (two if you count Crofton Park), and whilst greatly improved/desirable it doesn't seem to be over run by yummy mummies.Cue a yummy mummies thrad. NewWave
A word of warning re; transport from Brockley,I use the overground and South Eastern trains from Forest Hill and by the time they reach Brockley in the rush hour it can be a real crush to get on.I would buy on the Western side of Forest Hill (Horniman museum station exit) You can walk to Lordship lane and ED,Easy to get to Dulwich village, good bus services a nice community spirit ( a neighbourhood piano outside the station for instance!) and lots of green open spaces not to mention Sydenham woods.Yes its in zone 3 but much nicer than Brockley.I moved from Notting Hill and I'm very happy here. Saffron
Ladywell *might* be cheaper to buy/rent than FH. Morning trains are fine from Ladywell sta. V nice, small local shops, and Ladywell Fields Park is great for all ages. But realistically prices to rent/buy in Brockley/Ladywell are not much better than Nunhead/FH or similar ED borders. ultraburner
I lived just off Avignon road (back of Telegraph hill) for about 4 years and really liked it. Very quiet and also walkable to new cross for shops and the train.Lots of good places opening near the station these days, really like the orchard.
