*Bob*
Basically, Messrs Ross and Brand screwed-up.You'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who disagrees with that. But surely it's up to the offended party to decide to what degree he's offended.Maybe Sachs finds all the '78 year old man' stuff more offensive than the event itself. I would. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/4454-this-brandross-malarkey/page/3/#findComment-143569 Share on other sites
Sue
Didn't they also say that maybe Andrew Sachs would die when he heard what they were saying?Or was that a lie made up by the press?Because when I read that I thought it was worse than the stuff about the granddaughter. bon3yard
2 wrongs not making a right and all that, if I remember correctly Sachs portrayal of a dimwitted Spanish stereotype was deemed too offensive to air in(admittedly Francos fascist and reactionary)Spain...so at a guess thats 40 million offended Spaniards. EDOldie
Nobody thinks this is a massive publicity stunt by the BBC to inject some interest in two very unfunny 'comics' the BBC (and by definition, the licence payer) has put a great deal of money into and whose ratings are not taking off until now? Everyone does well from this, the papers, politicians, stars, has been stars and wannabe stars. We just pay for it and keep the whole show on the road. I'm not cynical, they are. SeanMacGabhann
How do "we" pay for it ? Personally i dont feel short changed as a licence payer. kristymac1
*Bob* saidThey did, all 18000 of them. Whether you believe the vast numbers of complaints were due to a witch hunt or not, 18000 people complained about the offence caused to them as consumers of the BBC. ????
But then 50,000 Spaniards racially abused the English team a couple of years back so the Spanish nation deserved that in advance...in fact, let's forget about civility altogether...its a bit 'old world' or 'Daily Mail' isn't it you Kaaaant Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/4454-this-brandross-malarkey/page/3/#findComment-143585 Share on other sites
EDOldie
We are paying for them and have no say about what they do or say. It's a massive publicity stunt for the BBC and everyone involved. They're taking the piss. No one will suffer, they'll all do well out of this and we, the little people, will continue paying for it. buggie
IIRC by monday the media were saying that they were up to 40 complaints, think the wall-to-wall coverage of it in the press has helped increase the complaints (remember a similar build-up occured after the poppadom-gate on Celeb BB a few years back). In a way its understandable that the press have leapt onto this - I dare say their financial correspondents have never been so overworked before, and it has made a bit of a change. If it had been so distressing to Andrew Sachs I'm sure it wouldn't have taken until the following week for it to be a news story, and I'm sure its more upsetting for him to be doorstepped as soon as he leaves home by a press pack than it was to listen to msg's left on his phone by a couple of overpaid/overgrown little boys. It's not clear on the transcipts what is said in the voicemail and what is banter between them in the studio - while this doesn't completely clear them, it may explain why it took a while for the fuss happen. buggie
have listened to the first one - did giggle several times, am wondering if they did actually leave the msg's or if they hung up the phone after hearing the beep (esp if Andrew Sachs only heard everything when listening to it on iplayer - if he can use that surely he'd normally be able to pick up his voicemails?) *Bob*
The inquiry will probably cost the licencepayer half a million. That sort of money could pay for another six series of 'My Family'.
