Southwark take away garden waste for free. They also supply brown bags for the waste for free from the libraries.

For the record , I would hope to put the cuttings in your brown bins and your right the library do supply bags, there are also free garden waste drops around the place too. I will take the clippings if you have no space or time to do so as part of the job. I say no space, as a hedge that goes all round a garden does yield "a lot" of off cuts ....

Maybe Firezza have diversified into the garden maintenance game.

It's not so funny if you're blind or in a wheelchair .

Try to think outside your own immediate sphere of concern.

I agree with Nigello, just ask your neighbour to trim their hedge and branches, sometimes people just do not see or realise their hedge is causing problems, also remember anyone with poor sight will just not see the branches and will get a swipe in the face of, sometimes, a very wet branch.

Hi all,

if you know the owner of the property, you could firstly ask them to trim their bushes, if not (or if you don't want to approach them directly) then contact Environmental Services on 02075252000 or environment@southwark.gov.uk (emailed pictures are always useful). They will then come and investigate and contact the owner. If the owner doesn't respond and do something about the overgrown bush (particularly when it is causing obstruction), then Southwark will prune the bush and bill the resident for the work.

Renata

And the council pruning can be hideous if really overgrown.

When the council contact home owners if flats in s subdivided house it can go horribily wrong.

Which flat is responsible for the front or side gardens?

if they assume flat A is responsible and serve a letter giving them two weeks to clear over grown vegetation but actually it was flat B...

A couple of caseworks files where this happened. Neighbours ignored the letter and they didnt have a garden to be overgrown but didnt think to pass to other flat. Council pay expensive contractor to cut things back. Bill sent to flat who suddenly do pass letter on...

Please please please do keep hudges, trees, etc cut back.

Agreed Renata, James, but surely the council has to know that trees that have been pollarded (like those on Barry Road) are likely to grow back apace from ground level. That's what's happened on Barry Road but nothing's been done, which is disappointing and annoying. Is there any joined-up thinking? Do pollarders commit to follow up a year later? If not, they ought to!
If we can, let's trim our own bushes. My dear husband has taken his secateurs and trimmed back the trunk growth on the two lime trees nearest us on Barry road. It took 10 minutes for each, not a problem. However, I would just like to say, harking back to my thread of last year... Did the tree surgeons really know what they were doing with our beautiful Barry Road Avenue when they cut them back so brutally? Today we have an avenue of weird green columns, rather than a canopy of beautiful mature trees. I am definitely not an expert in tree maintenance, but again ask someone who knows what they are talking about to explain their aboriculture strategy so that I can rest easy.

If you have no time or equipment to trim your own bushes!!

I offer a fair price trimming service

I cut the hedges with a petrol cutter, so no need for extension leads etc and NO NEED TO WAIT IN !!!

    • I would love something like this..I remember the one where Gails is now..It had some bric a brac furniture and 2nd hand clothes, I don't remeber the Oyster bar. The issue with the one on Zenoria St-And I speak as a long time habitué of Portobello, Kensington Market, Alfies,Spitalfields,Covent Garden (back when it had a decent vintage market on Mondays in the 80's and Early 90's) ..Was that a lot of the stuff they sold looked a bit meh..like a bad car boot fair. I also remember when we first moved here a small indoor market on the corner of North X road and Felbrigg rd that had bric a brac and bits of furniture..That one had some good stuff. I think the secret is in having a good mix of stalls selling well curated pieces at decent prices...It would also be good to have a few tables and rails available to rent for one-off sellers (car boot style) by application. When I lived in Notting Hill I used to do Portobello under the flyover a couple of times a year and made really decent money because people tended to go there on sundays for the Casual stallholders rather the same dealers selling the same stuff.
    • Highly recommend landscape gardener Jasper Davis. Jasper designed and built me a bespoke summer house.  He also transformed my garden including natural paving/sleepers and planting. Can't recommend him enough.IMG_9568.HEIC Contact Jasper on 07966 251778

    • I don't think so, sadly. The Zenoria Street indoor market failed to take off and generally speaking traders at Christmas Fairs and Farmers Markets are reporting that it isn't worth their while now. If you go to North Cross Road, the vast majority of visitors are only buying the street food! It was the same when I went to the Horniman Sunday market and second hand market yesterday. With the lack of footfall I couldn't understand how any of the traders could be making any money.
