Keef
As an aside, someone told me the other day that Golf originally meant Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden. No idea if there's any truth in it, but wouldn't be entirely surprised.Load of bo!!ocks, but quite a common myth it would seem. The medieval Dutch word "kolf" or "kolve" meant "club." It is believed that word passed to the Scots, whose old Scots dialect transformed the word into "golve," "gowl" or "gouf." By the 16th Century, the word "golf" had emerged.Sources: British Golf Museum, USGA Library Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/4393-the-lodge-lounged/page/2/#findComment-141571 Share on other sites

michy
The name for the Lodge actually came from the fact that it was originally a Masonic Lodge (rather than a Club in Notting Hill!)
