MadWorld74
I'm going down to Pompey next weekend for the Bupa Great South Run, and I've got to do a few things around the City before the run. What are the 'dodgy' areas of Portsmouth, as in where are the no go areas? I mean every place has them. If anyone could give me the heads up on where not to stray, I'd be grateful. I've got to go over the the lifeboat station right on the other side of Eastney? God knows. Can I walk over there or should I cab/bus it....? Horsebox
You've got to go to Eastney? Really? Ooooh, don't fancy your chances. D'ya have a stab-proof vest? It's proper rough around there, like. Worse than Camberwell and, to some extent, worse than Peckham :( Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/4376-portsmouthinfo-please/#findComment-140584 Share on other sites
????
It's a largely white and almost uniquely for the South East largely working class city...so most people on here would find it appalingly chavvy and common.....in reality, it's a decent place, with scary but largely decent inhabitants with a feel of a northern town Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/4376-portsmouthinfo-please/#findComment-140586 Share on other sites

*Bob*
Don't look anyone in the eye, don't spill anyone's pint and avoid the town centre between the hours of 5pm Friday though to midnight on a Sunday and you should be ok. There's a pub called "The Unemployed, Disillusioned, Drunk & Angry Docker" which should probably be avoided unless you can do the accent and look the part. Tony.London Suburbs
What are the 'dodgy' areas of Portsmouth? For expediency it may be quicker to list the non-dodgy areas....lolActually its a fine place full of "proper" people and as long as you are not planning a "One-Woman invasion" to take over their "Manor" you'll be all right! *Bob*
aye to thatIt's not like it's LA or anything. It's just a town in England, like any other. That said, don't look anyone in the eye, don't spill anyone's pint and avoid the town centre between the hours of 5pm Friday though to midnight on a Sunday and you should be ok. mockney piers
From Sky News at the time of the Iraq invasion"Umm Qasr is a town similar to Southampton", UK Defence Minister Geoff Hoon told the House of Commons yesterday. "He's either never been to Southampton, or he's never been to Umm Qasr", said one British soldier, informed of this while on patrol in Umm Qasr. Another added: "There's no beer, no prostitutes, and people are shooting at us. It's more like Portsmouth." MadWorld74
Oh sweet Jesus....somehow Peckham and all I loathe about it seems very, very appealing. 100% white working class areas scare the hell out of me. AcedOut
MP Don't tell me you're a scummer? ;)(I grew up near Bournemouth/Poole, so at the time Southampton was the nearest Premier division club. My old man has been a season ticket holder there for decades. Literally.) AcedOut
You have a point there MW. It does seem like quite a one sided place, although it has changed quite a bit over the years due to the easy(er) commute into London and as a result of redevelopment around the Gun Wharf area. It's not a place I'd choose to live, but it's far safer than any slightly dodgy London area in my opinion. ratty
Sorry been out all day.Pompey is my home town and I am proud to come from the most densley populated City in the UK.There are not many areas that you would naturally go to that you would need to avoid to be honest. Stick to Southsea / and you won't go far wrong. Eastney is ok too of course. When I was there (left in 94) the places to avoid were Buckland / Landport and Somerstown. I guess they still are!Don't try and walk to Eastney - it is deceptively far away. Get the bus or a cab (cab's are plentiful and all run by the same reasonably priced firm!)Where are you staying? Are you going out for the evening? Do you wanna eat or drink or dance?Remember, you will be among god's own chosen people as soon as you hit a PO post code. Mention Sterns to them and they will love you!!Have a great time and if you need any more info then PM me!http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2039/2507046038_5f32a84312.jpg?v=0 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/4376-portsmouthinfo-please/#findComment-140811 Share on other sites
