Love, love, love Withnail! I'm one of those tedious people who fall about in the pub quoting bits to one another.

Also, is the JG in Donnie Darko Jake Gyllenhaal? If so, what about Brokeback Mountain, he was excellent in that. Also rather good in the Iraq War movie whose name I've forgotten.

Jarhead. Mmm, yes he was good. Although the book is better (*yawns*)

Well for my two cents I love Donnie Darko - especially the great soundtrack - and am with Jeremy on the time travel/parrallel universes explanation. He allows himself to die to save his girlfriend.

Withnail is also legendary.

I'm with Keef on the Pixies though. *whispers and points in Sean's direction* - "Keef, maybe it's a generational thing - you know what these old folk are like..."

Seriously, anyone, find me a film with a more finely honed script. Normally films like that come from theatre and rarely translate to the big screen.

Withnail works perfectly in that British gritty cinema sort of way.

Again, I understand people not liking it, or even hating it (and its proponents "fecking students" etc) but why deny its brilliance?

Writer/director Richard Kelly offers a deep, dark and convoluted interpretation in which only the time-travelling Donnie can resolve a divergence between the primary universe and a tangent reality. Weird stuff ? no wonder it acquired a cult following.

A summary can be found about halfway down this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donnie_Darko
