Myself and out bearded friend went to see them at the Shepherds Bush Empire, it was the same year as you saw them, but a few months earler.I met you guys for a beer before you went to see them, but couldn't face the gig, and was totally gutted to hear they'd done the feckin whale song!!!!! Otta
It was Feb 2007 I saw them in SheBu. It was particularly annoying because although the smoking ban didn't come in til July that year, the empire had taken it upon themselves to start early, but had no option to go out for a fag, it was stay in or leave and don't come back.I bloody hated that gig! StraferJack
to prove otta's point:http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/the-decemberists/2007/shepherds-bush-empire-london-england-5bd0c32c.htmlbut going to a gig for one song is a mugs game... smoking ban or no smoking ban Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/43612-hipsters/page/9/#findComment-749116 Share on other sites
Otta
It was more a case of going because my friend was deperate to see them and needed company. I liked them, but was disappointed they didn't do that song, and it was a weird night for several reasons.Shocked to realise it was over 7 years ago though! I was still in my 20s!!! El Pibe
titch juicy.Excellent post, agree on almost everything, well except grizzly bear, good but country mile from best band. I hated the audience at bright eyes not the band; actually mr oberst had a distinct lack of self knowing irony that i had attributed to him. My mistake, not his admittedly.I might even give waaves another chance on the back of that. (first album committed the crime of being boring, noise doesn't cover the lack of a good tune). But how can an NMH gig be dissappointing?!?! We were literaly never expecting to ever see them again, but they came back, job done...and did a solid set.If your friend mentions the word acoustics then just hit him from me. Otta
RE the NMH Gig last night, The band were great, the acoustics were rubbish, and the standing crowd were asleep. Was a shame because the set deserved more of a reaction, but it was all a bit polite applause where we were, except us of course, but I got some funny looks. So as a gig, I'd say the atmosphere could have been better, but that's the crowd's fault. As someone who was indifferent to the band before last night, I really enjoyed their performance and don't know what else they could have done. StraferJack
gigging in London is such a strange beast - so many opportunities to see so many great bands and yet so many dull crowds.Of course one breeds the other I suppose - if you are used to going to gigs why get excited by Yet Another OneWhy do people spend so much cash going only to yak over the set as well? Otta
Once upon a time I'd go to loads of gigs whether I was particularly interested in the act or not (I even went to see Nickleback, and actually was rewarded with a pretty spectacular stage show). I just loved the crowds and the atmosphere, but I'd always do my best to get in to it and cheer and jump around a bit. If I really couldn't get in to it I'd leave or just sit in the bar, but that was very rare. And then I just got fed up with it. Yes there's the smoking ban, yes there's kids, yes I'm older and don't have quite the energy I did 10 years ago, but really and truly I just don't enjoy the experience so much anymore. So these days I'd only go out to see something I really wanted to see, or to see people I really wanted to see.Luckily last night I got to see the people, and was also pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed the band.
