My mother's French speaking as my Grandmother on her side is French. There are numerous French people in this part of London who have lived her for years. Maybe not as vocal as the Poles, but they're here.

Precisely, loads of Turks, Greeks, West Indians, Africans, East Europeans, etc. Did they go unnoticed then?

They've always been here but the Western Europeans haven't. Not many Germans though- not surprising since all the Germans I've met here on educational or training courses have always criticised our NHS systems, transport, housing etc. (my mum says the Germans are ultimately responsible for all our present problems anyway!)

In my case, I think having Hugenot blood is now a long enough period of time to have removed the french tarnish :)
