Obviously people like living in ED but to suggest it's one of the best places to live because it's getrifying is just nonsense. There are many places in London besides the five listed that fulfil the qualifying catagories better than those five to get onto the list. Like I said, the list is compiled and aimed at a certain demographic. It's not negative to say that.

if we are to believe in "supply and demand" dictating house prices, then East Dulwich clearly is not one of the most desirable place to live in London. In fact it lies quite low on the list versus other boroughs.

a lot of journalists live round here, of child bearing age... so it fits their criteria

I personally like the area as it suits my own personal needs, but to say it's the most desirable area makes me question their judgement.

it's a relatively 'cheap' area.

entertaining read though.

also, anyone who wants prices to go up is kidding themselves. Unless you're living in your forever house (which most ppl aren't) then we're the fools...

moreover, if you're in your dream home and you have kids... your kids are unlikely to benefit as they'll struggle to match their upbringing when you divide with your siblings and after tax

it's a false economy. nothing is good about house prices going up imo

I agree, if you don't like it here, act now!

I've lived here since 1991 and brought up my kids here (who wouldn't want to live anywhere else... Good luck with that). It was a bit of a shit hole when we moved here from Kennington, and now I'm pretty incredulous at the prices. If I was 30 now with a baby and a decent but not great job, I don't think I could move to what was then a run down and out of the way suburb...

It's already happening.

Nunhead appears to be rapidly going the same way as East Dulwich, including rocketing house prices ...... :(

I also moved here in 1991, and I think it's unfair to call it "a bit of a shit hole."

It may have been a bit run down, but it was (and is) near parks and woods and other green spaces, which was my main reason for moving here.

I've lived in ED since 1987 and have noticed the changes since then, most of which have been for the better.

It was relatively cheap in 1987, which is why we moved here from Greenwich. However, to describe ED as "relatively cheap" is surely questionable, given the house prices and the price tags in so many of the upmarket shops. I suppose, though, that it's "relatively cheap" compared with Kensington or Hampstead.

In London these days 'relatively cheap' means recently gentrified or about to be gentrified, which accounts for probably 2/3 of inner London boroughs. To get real value for money anywhere close to the rest of the country you need to be looking at boroughs like Bexley, Barking & Dagenham, Croydon.

Cor - that would have to be SOME soup and bread.

    • Trees are great - I plant and raise my own and petition the council to look at damaged specimens and plant more - but they need to be tended to when they’re in non-woodland spaces. I encourage all those who have a strong liking for trees to plant them, grow from seed etc. - much better for all than tapping on keypads.

    • As a customer of DKH I have sympathy with the staff but this a matter for their trade union to address. The law states that temperatures in the workplace must be “reasonable”, and adds guidance that a reasonable minimum temperature is 16C for sitting down jobs like checkouts or 13C for physical work like packing and stacking.  The law also states that there must be easily readable thermometers installed in the workplace so that staff can check the temperature. When I still worked, these would be mercury thermometers red-lined at 16C, so staff knew when it was permissible to stop work if they were uncomfortable. However, I always worked in trade union represented jobs. I suspect (but certainly don’t know) that a lot of Sainsbury’s staff these days don’t bother to join the union, so are not protected (please put me right if you know otherwise).  In any workplace, you either take collective action to improve things or just accept the conditions imposed on you. If staff are in a union, they need to take a hand in making sure the union and its reps do their job in representing them.
