Peckhampam
This has opened and had a good review in the metro today. Has anyone tried it? Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/41954-the-camberwell-arms/ Share on other sites
mancity68
Yes. Went in last week. Beer was good and not as stupidly expensive as some pubs. But - I dunno. There was just something a bit sterile about it as a pub. Felt like the anteroom to a restaurant. Definitely more Anchor and Hope than Canton Arms.We didn't eat though - suspect food will be great but menu not really my cup f tea (as a veggie)I think it will warm up with use perhaps? anonymous_third_part
went last night - food is great. I think the bar area is good too. Brilliant to have a place of this standard on your doorstep. We (three people) had porkfat on toast, grilled onions, cuttlefish, ox cheek pie, rabbit, bread and butter pudding...wine is from ?15 a bottle upto ?60 good beers, ciders etc on tapCame to ?70 a head. But this was with two bottles of ?45 wine. prety depressing spending that much really (it wasnt my choice). It would be reasonable if you didnt do that.A bit st johns / anchor and hope / canton arms-ish / franks - which is fine by me. its a format that has stood the test of time. Too Good To Be True
If you're only going for a drink, I'd go to (the large) upstairs. The food is v good, but I'd say Cafe 67 just edges it (and is roughly the same price). If you're heading to Camberwell Church Street, look out for the Lebanese Grill opening next door to the Dome Hotel. It doesn't look fancy, but I reckon it'll be v good. It's run by the same people as Falafel. edcam
We went on Sat night, the food was great and the atmosphere is much, much better than it was in its previous incarnations. I loathe places that don't operate booking systems but we didn't have to wait long (about 20 mins.) Jeremy
On a slight tangent... walked past yesterday (closed for Mon lunch unfortunately) and was thinking that Camberwell has so much going for it now... one of the best selections of restaurants in South London, some good pubs/bars, a few nice cafes, some really beautiful housing... in theory it ought to be a real hot spot. Doesn't mention individual price except for the grand total at the end of the review.I also raised an eyebrow at mention of 'current leaning towards organic and biodynamic bottles'. Really?Hmmm. StraferJack
Have you tried to buy a decent place in Camberwell Jez? I'd say it was popular Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/41954-the-camberwell-arms/#findComment-731139 Share on other sites
Too Good To Be True
Camberwell is a more natural destination for restaurants than ED (although not as good for shopping and other things)Higher population density, lower commercial rents, main roads.Fewer families+big gay community+King's College+Camberwell Arts College = high spending on going out Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/41954-the-camberwell-arms/#findComment-731196 Share on other sites
jimbo1964
Problem is all the main roads are pretty unpleasant which is why Camberwell Grove and a few surrounding streets stand out. I used to love The Grove when it was good (fabulous nights watching World Cup games in the small bar). The Greeky still looks attractive. It will always be busier and less salubrious than Lordship Lane but the options around there are now better on the whole and the street is much more pleasant than it used to be. The Grove was up and down for years and is actually a fairly pleasant place now (albeit a chain pub.)Now there is The Camberwell Arms, FM Mangal, Angels & Gypsies, Communion, Silk Road, The Crooked Well, The Vineyard and a couple of other places all offering things that can't be found in ED. We still like going out in ED but if we want really good food, more often than not we end up in Camberwell. Jeremy
Yeah I think edcam is right, it is rapidly changing. My thinking was that although the main road is a bit grotty, it's still a hell of a lot smarter than Rye Lane. Yet property in Peckham Rye (on the "right" side of Rye Lane of course) seems much more sought after. Even though Camberwell appears to have more to offer.
