Louisa
Not that if ever entertain posh cheese on toast as a meal option, but I was told that this particular branch of Franco Manca is only open on weekends? If that's the case that's just ridiculous. Louisa. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/41744-draft-house/page/7/#findComment-797244 Share on other sites
VixSta
Says on their Twitter page they will be open on 14th Nov, so this Friday! Look forward to trying them out! DulwichFox
They claim on their website their Pizzas are cooked in a wood burning oven. As I understand it wood burning ovens are not permitted in any smokeless zone. I believe a well established Pizza House somewhere in North London was forced to stop using theirs after decades of use. I think the one at The Actress is Gas ??? Is that right. ? Having said all that, these oven are supposed to take 2 weeks to reach operating temperature. So in reply to Louisa's post above, it would not be practical to just open at weekends. Mustard
Why are there businesses selling logs for people to burn in their ED wood burners in that case? Mustard
Franco Manca has been at Brixton Market for many years. It would have been shut down if their wood burning stove was not up to code. simonethebeaver
I assume they will be using an exempted fireplace, as set out in the relevant regs. Several wood stone pizza ovens and similar seem to be included.http://www.southwark.gov.uk/downloads/download/1992/approved_smokeless_fuels_and_exempted_fireplaces Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/41744-draft-house/page/7/#findComment-797449 Share on other sites

Admittedly I'm biassed (biased?) by having one served up to me almost raw (twice), but some of their topping combinations are just strange. Not very impressed by Sorsi Morsi's, either.Looking forward to trying the new place, as it's a bit of a trek to The Gowlett. Jeremy
I know when they opened their toppings sounded a bit "out there", but they've toned them down. I don't think the current menu could be described as strange at all.Saying that - Franco Manca will leave them in their dust. Louisa
I still find it inconceivable in times of economic hardship that people can justify spend anything in the price range we speak of for cooked bread with toppings on it. You could fill your boots at a working mans caf with twice as much food for half the price. Bizarre people.Louisa. Otta
Whilst I have absolutely nothing against the Gowlett, I really have never quite gotten what all the fuss was about when it comes to ther place or their pizza. It's good, it's not special IMO. You don't find that strange, Jeremy?? Anyway, I had it (once). It was both raw and vile. And I love gorgonzola usually :( Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/41744-draft-house/page/7/#findComment-797815 Share on other sites
Jeremy
Sue, you used to tell us all what an easy walk it was from ED to Hoopers when you had gigs there! (it was an easy walk... the Gowlett is even easier)."Pea, leek, gorgonzola, ricotta and spinach" - it's unorthodox for a pizza topping, but as a combination of flavours I would consider it fairly normal. Actually it sounds quite good. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/41744-draft-house/page/7/#findComment-797829 Share on other sites
Louisa
Jeremy you know as well as I do that you can go to the Dulwich Cafe (or similar) and have a large meal and drink for under a fiver. Now I challenge you to find a pizza "restaurant" that serves up anything nearly as healthy and filling for the same price. You are justifying the unjustifiable and you know it! Bread with bits on 8-20 quid or a meal with meat and two veg for under a fiver. I rest my case. Louisa. Earl Aelfheah
Louisa - you're barking up the wrong tree with this one. FMs pizzas are reasonably priced, extremely filling and healthy. Better value than anything you would get in Dulwich Cafe and unlike their fry ups, not something you could easily knock up at home.http://www.francomanca.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/FM-Generic-Autumn-20141.pdf Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/41744-draft-house/page/7/#findComment-797844 Share on other sites
