Louisa
Here we go again. Pick on Louisa for having an opinion. I knew it wouldn't take long. Another poster raised a valid question regarding Rye Lane, I had an opinion on that, and I get branded all sorts of unsavoury things. Picked on for suggesting Rye Lane is a utopia? This is exactly how world wars start SJ, people not being allowed to have a voice. As I stated 'Louisaism' and an extreme form at that. I ignore positive posts because I do not wish to be seen as a martyr, but if I must ride to Coventry naked on horse back to ensure working class voices are not silenced then so be it. Louisa. KidKruger
I really hope that locals near Southall and Wembley are not also hoping to culturally-cleanse those areas. For me, Rye Lane is an example of the benefit of a cross-cultural city. If you don't see it, because its not "the way WE do things around here", then you're missing out - but don't spoil it for those who use it as part of their day-to-day life ! KidKruger
JohnL - what I was doing is outlining my perception of what is happening on this thread - a bunch of stand-still posters who want to ignore the day-to-day use of a high street by it's established community but at same time 'improve' it according to their vague and inconsistent grudges. The loaded comments about smells and the look of food and inferences to H&S breaches are just a "we are better than 'them' " monologue. Or are you really seriously saying that because you smelt fish as a child in Swansea and didn't like it, Rye Lane should change how it displays it's fish ?!?!I'm hearing redneck comments on this thread and I'm calling it that. JohnL
I don't want to change whats there - doesn't bother me at all because I choose where I shop (and mostly it's boring Sainsburys). I would like some coffee shops and a few others which are closer to home (I think planning permission already granted for one (don't know what) - and the Magnet shop below Co-operative house is now gone - would love a little Cafe there rather than an empty unit again). Ozzies is Okay, Gregs has a few seats :)I think the argument is that this will put rents up and push others out (which is gentrification to many I think) ?Night time in Peckham has been transformed by the Bussey building events IMHO - but not sure how this is viewed by most.KidKruger Wrote:-------------------------------------------------------> JohnL - what I was doing is outlining my> perception of what is happening on this thread - a> bunch of stand-still posters who want to ignore> the day-to-day use of a high street by it's> established community but at same time 'improve'> it according to their vague and inconsistent> grudges.> > The loaded comments about smells and the look of> food and inferences to H&S breaches are just a "we> are better than 'them' " monologue. Louisa
There is a selective click on this forum, who when it suits accuse people like me of being secretly 'racist' because I hold a view about the ever so sacred Rye Lane. I've lived here all my life and I am entitled to an opinion about the streets I grew up on. KK terms like 'redneck' and 'honky' whether used in the general sense or to make a sarcastic point are still offensive and just drag an otherwise honest and open debate back down to the floor again. My comments about smells and the look of the place are not 'loaded' at all, and I see this whole thing as a way of attacking anyone who has an honest belief that a high street should accommodate the whole population and not leave some of us isolated and forced to travel miles out of our way to buy things. I want Rye Lane mixed use, above all else CLEAN streets which are hair and chicken bone free. No excuse for it.Louisa. david_carnell
There is a happy middle ground.KK is right when he says that these shops serve the community and there is no need to be scared of them or seek to force them to leave. However, Lou's gripes about cleanliness of some premises and of the street in general could certainly do with improving to make the place more friendly to shop.It is a narrow lane. Shops spilling out onto the pavement with their wares makes navigating it even harder. A return to proper frontages or clear demarcations would surely be sensible. I don't think anyone can enjoy hair balls and chicken bones on the street. That isn't a plea to close those shops, but to the shops, their customers (!) and the council to try and ensure that litter is dealt with quickly. Why should I and others who I know be forced to ignore the day to day use of Rye Lane. I want to use it, I can't, it's in a poor condition and needs smart ending up with at least some of the shops I would use- and did when I was younger on that very street. I have no vague grudge KK please note that. I have a consistent grudge which I have sent numerous letters to the council about. This whole 'PeckhamVision' thing, I was hoping would remedy my concerns, but so far it seems to be aimed more at protecting the artists and creative communities rather than anyone else so will shall watch this space. Louisa
SJ, you know my opinions on certain things, I've aired them numerous times on this forum. Rye Lane is probably one of the main non-ED specific gripes I raise most often! My paranoia about said tongue in cheek "Louisaism" isn't just about me, it's about an attack on anything which is against the popular grain. Lots of people, including you, do not disagree with everything I say on here and yet somehow I feel as though I have to back down or vigourously defend myself against people because certain phrases pop-up which I would be accused of being "paranoid" or "chip-on-shoulder" about. We all are stakeholders in our local high streets, we are all entitled to opinions about them. I don't feel I am being paranoid when I see provocative phrases on here suggesting my whole ideology on the outcome of Rye Lane is about the removal of the current established community in some sort of 'ethnic cleanse'. It is not about that all, I shouldn't even have to go down this route to explain myself, everyone here (appears) fairly intelligent and reasonable to a point, can we not have this debate without digging out the lowest common denominator? StraferJack
from reading the thread, I'm seiing (roughly) an even split between people who agree with you, and people who disagree with youSo that seem fairly ok to bat opinions back and forth without it requiring you to feel you are bing picked on or need to be defensivethat said, you are on the more strident end of regular posters so by definition people will gravitate to and argue with you. It seems you want to make strong forceful opinions, but when less than 100% people say "absolutely Louisa" you feel that those arguing against you are someone how ganging up on you. I just can't see thatThere does seem to be something specific between you and KK on this thread - I don't know if he is part of some "clique" or not tho. There doesn't seem to be a huge swell to back some of his claims 100% Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/41327-rye-lane/page/5/#findComment-722029 Share on other sites
LadyDeliah
Rye Lane caters for mainly non-white or non-middle class customers. White and middle class ED residents don't like it.So what?Go somewhere else to shop then.
