PeckhamRose
I think there are stables nearby. And yes let's remember that not all of us are familiar with the area or what passes for normal. tiddles
We used to see a lot more of them up and down lordship lane - when we had a police station (where there were stables) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/41002-2-police-with-horses-trodding-down-crystal-palace-road/#findComment-718145 Share on other sites

Jeremy
They used to be a daily occurrence when I lived on Crystal Palace Rd. Along with the huge mounds of horse shit! rch
Mounted police are doing high-profile patrols in East Dulwich and Herne Hill to address the high burglary stat concerns in both areas. I had a chat with two of them yesterday on Calton Ave, they'll be patrolling today as well, and both the police and the horses are really friendly. katanita
Oh good, not going mad. Thought I heard horses go past my window last night, but had curtains closed so didn't see them and was beginning to doubt myself... Penguin68
It is not often realised that on horseback the police get a much better view over fences and into gardens, allowing them to spot lurkers and hiders more easily. This is a better perspective than they can get on foot patrol (not that we see that nowadays very much) and a much better perspective than from inside a car. When the stables were in the Whately Road station they used to patrol quite regularly. I missed them when they left.I suspect that there isn't a connection, but it's interesting that post-removal of the stables/regular patrols of mounted police, crime does seem to have gone up in the area (or at least our awareness of it on the EDF). It's good that they are increasing patrols though. DulwichFox
Used to see the mounted police at some Millwall games.. Now considered redundant for that purpose and no longer needed. Usually only 1/2 dozen police outside these days. Mousey McP
See two horses this evening. One,a giant White horse and smaller dark horse, both had WPCs in the saddle. One left a deposit at the corner of Ulverscroft rd and North X. NICE! Then they stopped on the corner of Lacon Rd to talk to pedestrians and let their children stroke the horses Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/41002-2-police-with-horses-trodding-down-crystal-palace-road/#findComment-718552 Share on other sites
fl0wer
"Deposit" = gold dust for compost heaps, waste not want not. After all, you have already paid for it, those are pampered horses there.... Peckhamgatecrasher
You need to let it rot down or it will produce too much heat and scorch the roses. EDmummy
Grew up around horses. Their 'deposits' don't smell bad. It's a great smell. Unlike the very large dog that does a daily dump on the corner of Hindmans and Overhill.
