double glazing quotes and recommendations

Can anyone recommend a double glazing company? And has anyone recently had a bay window replaced with double glazing and can give an idea of cost? I've been trying to get an idea online but none of the double glazing companies will give any kind of precise quote and all I find is stories about people who have been ripped off. It seems if you buy the window yourself in B&Q and get a qualified friend to fit, it will cost a few hundred quid but double glazing companies charge thousands!
