EatLessBread
We are looking for a very inexpensive venue (not a place of worship) for a baby naming ceremony. I am currently considering the Horniman but have yet to be quoted a fee....Budget is low.My best friend runs a catering company so I'd like to bring in catering, etc, from her.I'm new to this area really and was wondering if anyone knew of any good venues. My daughter's name has an association with music so if any venues come to mind that have a musical history, that would be even more perfect.Thank you in advance for any recco's,xx Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/40678-venue-ideas-please/ Share on other sites
ednewmy
No idea if it's the kind of thing you're after but the constitutional club have a hall they hire out for "dos" etc...I don't know anything else about it I'm afraid, it's just that I live round the corner so walk past it most days so it's sort of the one place that comes to mind! Sue
I've just spent five minutes trying to post on this thread, and all I can think is that I've somehow included a "forbidden" forum word - but I can't work out what it is!ETA: Have tried again and given up. I will try to PM you but presumably the same thing is going to happen, that I won't be able to post it :(ETA: The PM has been sent OK, but the exact same words will not post on here. Very strange. Twirly
We looked at the Horniman about 5 years ago for our wedding, and it was very expensive to hire, plus you had to have their "preferred suppliers" for things like catering (Suzanne James in those days). My guess is that if you wanted a weekend, then you'd be competing with the wedding trade and looking at those sorts of prices (Belair House too). You probably need a community centre (pubs or restaurants with a function room would be good too, but you might also have to have their catering). One venue we also thought of for a reception was the St Barnabas Church Hall, which is lovely inside (but you had to get married in the church, which wasn't what we wanted). But that might be worth looking at for a "family party" type event? The Constitutional Hall would be good too - not quite as nice as St Barnabas, but fine (I used to do the tango classes there). Jeremy
You might get a good deal in the winter though... still worth pursuing Horniman just in case. speedbird
Belair House is very good value, though I think it's just changed hands. We had a function there and was a great place. We had also enquired about the Horniman but it was very expensive. The gallery in the village is also for hire and beautiful, but around same cost as the Horniman, out of the two it would have been the Gallery but the date wasn't available when we needed it, hence we went to Belair House. missse22
The Albrighton centre opposite big sainsburys dog kennel hill is lovely , clean and very reasonable price. Saying that if its a Sunday you are after you will have no joy there. ludoscotts
Can second the albrighton centre, really friendly, give you set up time, 1 room with kitchen if required and second room with room terrace, very plain but can be decorated very easily and totally transformed into a fab space, book very early for Sundays though as they do get booked up well in advance. Hagrid
For winter quite like the left hand side of the plough pub (free to book and they close it off), upstairs at EDT, summer /spring - the Griffin in Dulwich Village and the cricket room at Dulwich College. You could also try the Peckham Liberal Club. For music, big budget and lots of people try Rivolli Ball Room Crofton Park/Brockely.
