Mrs TP
Bit random but was thinking to myself last night I never hear owls in London. I grew up on the border of Liverpool / Lancashire and much as our area was relatively built up extensive farmland was just a mile or so away and there were loads of Tawny Owls. At a certain times of night there would be two clearly perched on a tree in our garden and they were a regular feature but I have never seen any in London. Does anyone ever see / hear them around here? Surely there are some in Dul Park, Peck Rye? Alex K
To my regret, a search by "owl" doesn't identify a post here some years ago -- a foundling owl, huddled in a cardboard box, was shown -- but yes, they are here. Blackcurrant
There are tawny owls in Dulwich Wood and Sydenham Hill and little owls in Greendale, Belair Park and probably other green spaces. fl0wer
As luck would have it I have been hearing owls all this week along Underhill Rd, around sunset. The sound is from our rooftops where I think one perches to spot rodents who gather beneath overflowing bird feeders in the back gardens. http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/gardening-blog/2014/jan/18/alys-fowler-gardening-living-with-rats Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/40363-real-owls-in-ed-peck-rye/#findComment-712826 Share on other sites
glenfruin
This is interesting as I was awake in the night recently and I thought I could hear an owl call and we live near to Nunhead cemetery and Peckham Rye Park. SkyofFire
I think they're intimidated by those foreign green birds who've come over here and taken over our town. I suspect most of our owls are now in Spain, where they read the Daily Mail and complain about the natives. fl0wer
Good reason to keep up the pressure on Councils to mow less, wherever possible. Owls NEED wide areas of rough grassland to hunt across, because the clumps harbour small mammals. hpsaucey
Hi there Mrs TP, Might be worthwhile going along to one of the Dawn Chorus bird walks usually on later in the year - Peckham Rye Park/One Tree Hill and other places. I took my son along and we couldn't believe just how many types of bird are actually living in Peckham Rye Park. evildrwallace
I hadn't seen this thread so I posted the below on a new thread this morning:For the last few days I've been hearing what I can only assume is an owl around the gardens at the back of our house in Upland Rd. Mostly at night but sometimes quite early evening. We heard a tawny owl quite often last year but this sounds different - three short barks, quite doglike, repeated at 30 sec or so intervals. At first I thought it was a fox but the call is always the same and moves too quickly for a fox. I will try to record it over the next couple of days. Nigello
Evil...I go to work very early and heard something very similar, or at least something I could not quite place, two days ago. It was like a loud knocking but way to forceful for a woodpecker, spaced half-a-minute apart. I live opposite Goodrich School, near to Dunstan's Road. wee quinnie
That sounds like the same thing, Nigello, and I am just between Goodrich and Crebor, so very near you. I have tried identifying it on the RSPB website and similar but, so far, the only thing I can find that sounds like it is an Australian Barking owl. I will try to make a recording and post it here to see if anyone can tell us what it is.
