pk
i'm pretty sure that this emoticon is giving 'the finger' >:D<, so why do people use it so much?TLS is a prime example - are you intending to say 'f*** you', or words to that effect, in so many of your posts? Michael Palaeologus
Hmmm - on close examinations the little bumps on the side of the hands would seem to be the thumbs, thus the raised digit is a middle finger. Annasfield
It is definitely "the finger". I think that people think the cheesey grin makes it less offensive. pk
i thought that people might think that, but i don't think that it is a thumbs uplooking carefully the thumbs are out and not up, and if you hovver over it it say 'the finger smiley'surely the 'thumbs up' one is this: (tu) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/4026-this-emoticon/#findComment-127643 Share on other sites
david_carnell
Goodness, pk may well be right although you need bloody good eyesight to tell.I never realised. The grin makes it deceptive. I thought it was a happy-grinning-thhumbs-up. How wrong I was. I feel I may need to go back and do some editing. MelbourneGr
It's a thumbs up dude. You can see the back of the hand and the fingers wrapped around. The name of the smiley would have come about from reference purposes. HonaloochieB
All emoticons are bastards, why should this one be an exception.I've said it before and I'll say it again - they're the devil's punctuation. *Bob*
Yes, emoticons are absolute COCK. Users of emoticons need to sit down, have a good hard look at their lives and try to figure out where it all went wrong. I mean that in the nicest possible way of course - yeah guys? :)-D Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/4026-this-emoticon/#findComment-127676 Share on other sites

MelbourneGr
If this >:D< emoticon is supposed to be offensive, then this :) emoticon isn't a smiling face, but a face with a banana mouth causing even more offence than being told to 'f off'.In fact all the emoticons are offensive! citizenED
I think it's one poor, confused, emoticon. The fingers up gesture suggests an angry dismissive state of mind, a countenance of aggrssion and arrogance but this is countered by the kinetic grin which is at the same time a snigger and, I posit, a sneer, reminiscent of the sadistic grin of Nicholson in The Shining. And then there is the colour. Whereas all fellow emoitons are in pale yellow, this sorry fellow is devil red, like a steaming, raging bull. Perhaps he has shifted all the way through the chromatic notches as he pulsed through many different stages of rage on his way to the rude symbol he proffers or perhaps he's simply a slip of the mouse during the clip-artist's colouring-in session.Either way, I wouldn't give the matter too much thought.
