This morning my partners interupted a group of men (not bin men!) going through the rubbish in our development's communal bin stores.

Later on he noticed that all the bin store doors for the next door developemt were swinging wide open...

Just want to remind people to be careful what they throw out and make sure confidential things are shreaded.

I suspect something similar has happened to my partner who just received a letter from sports direct in peckham chasing up money from an 'incident' that happened in store last month... She was abroad at the time but it seems that the perpetrator gave my partners name and address. Definitely be careful what you throw away!
If you are actually throwing out -to trash - (as opposed to recyling for someone else's use) old computers take out the hard drive and actually smash it to bits (with a hammer) after running any wipe programs - it is possible to recontruct smahed Winchester discs, but you need a government strength lab to do it and get useable data from it. Hard drives are wiped by over-writing them - but as all which is actually stored anyway are '0's and '1's there is a chance you will over-write a '0' with another '0' - that's why you are meant to over-write multiple times - I think 7 is the standard.
I've seen more than once men going through the bins on Lordship Lane estate. Because the bins are stored in gated high wall bin cupboards you wouldn't necessarily know they are in there doing so. They carry big backpacks to fill up with whatever they find!

Unless you are worried about the NSA or MI5 coming after you then that's probably overkill - we're talking common or garden bad guys here who want the easy information. A program like http://www.diskwipe.org/ will do the job.

    • We had lunch here today. It was really good. I had a salad bowl with falafels. You don't have to have chilli and garlic - they ask you when you order. It was a really generous portion, all very fresh, and the excellent salad  came with three very  large and tasty falafels, two stuffed vine leaves, hummus and tahini. Excellent value. I can't remember exactly how much it was, but around £6 to £7. My partner had a wrap, which he said was good too, and a freshly squeezed juice. We ate in, but I took half of mine home to eat later. There were people in front of us, but we didn't have to wait long. They have a loyalty card - free drink the third time you go, free side the sixth time and a free wrap or bowl the tenth time. Highly recommended!
    • No need to wait until next year. They always run a post event feedback meeting. And yes, they were using some new contractors this year because the previous ones were not good enough by their own admission.
    • Sorry for dragging this back on topic, but earlier I had a discussion with Luca the site manager who was also singing the praises of the 'new' waste management team. He invited me on to the ground to the east of the 'parkrun start' path to check out how well they'd done. Within 20 paces I'd picked up (and given to him) 2 cellophane filter tip wrappers, 3 fag butts, a 2" screw, assorted scraps of plastic wrappers....! He awkwardly then said they were still onsite, and sent 1 guy out to litter pick. He also made the statement that it's "an impossible task". I will be over there tomorrow to find, collect and document all the remaining litter, to assist with next year's consultation. I think it's important to pass on that type of information?
    • Hi My friend who’s a local tree surgeon unfortunately had his small Stihl petrol chainsaw stolen last week. As a tree surgeon, this is pretty gutting.    I wondered whether anyone on here might have a spare secondhand one that they don’t use anymore. Or perhaps one that’s been left in a shed or garage gathering dust that isn’t needed. Joe would be delighted and very grateful if we could magic him a replacement soon! 🤩 Thanks so much!  Claire (07946) 728879
