capt_birdseye
I'm interested in getting involved in a little bit of Book Swapping. There were a few Book Swap get togethers a while back which sounded faitly successful but seem to have petered out. There are websites out there where you can list books you have to swap, you find someone who has a book you like and, in good faith, you post books to each other. Nice idea, but who can be bothered to be constantly wrapping books, working out postage etc etc.?How about a local equivalent? You list any books you have to swap on this thread and anyone who wants to read what you're offering can PM you and arrange a local swap. Peckhamgatecrasher
Please let CWALD have the John Le Carre. I promised it to her and then realised it was a library book. Doh.Great idea, but I'd rather stir up the physical, free-for-all bookswap again. Really nice to meet people and all that. How about we do it once a month along the lines of the ED Drinks? That is, pick a different location each month and congregate?Really miss this so thanks. I'll shut up if people prefer the cyber option. indiepanda
I really like the idea but would rather do in person too - partly because I'd like the excuse to meet people and partly because I'm going to be trying to get rid of a lot of my books and it's more effort to type up a list than bring a carrier bag of books to a pub! Cassius
I'd be into a meet up too - however in the meantime if anyone has a copy of Ross Leckie's 'Scipio' to swop with his 'Carthage' that would be great. capt_birdseye
Well, if there are enough willing participants for a meet-up, then who am I to argue? Perhaps we could do a combination of both? I like the idea of changing the venues as well (not living particularly close to the George Canning!).Anyone want to kick off with a suggested date/venue? Asset
I'm up for doing this too. I went to the first Gearoge Canning one, couldn't make subsequent ones and then it fizzled out. Jah Lush
Count me in too. Defo up for this. I went to the second George Canning one and missed a few afterwards and then it faded out so it would be good to get this up and running again. Keef
Count me in too, Mrs Keef has bookshelves everywhere, and they are all overflowing! Sure we could bring a shed load! Peckhamgatecrasher
Why not strike while the iron's hot? This Monday (11th), 8 pm at The Clockhouse.Only potential problem is that Steve used to store the leftover books and flog them for charity. In this instance, we'd better be prepared to take back any books not wanted. Jah Lush
Good idea. I can make that. Anybody else?I'm sure we could take any unwanted books left over to charity shops ourselves. Ellwood
when i was in japan we used to do a book auction which never raised huge amounts but the little we did raise was put towards charity. people would bid with each other for books that were brought along, the amounts never went above a couple of pounds. it was great fun, sometimes we'd read a book and chat about it too, all of this was over lunch somewhere. just an idea for the future perhaps. citizenED
Right - its official, I am declaring the right to be royally pi$$ed off. There is another thread, somewhere hidden on this board, trying to get a picnic organised for tomorrow, Sunday, in Dulwich park. Its been running for weeks. There has been some limp support for it some half-hearted promises of attendence and feeble declarations of intention but essentially the poor beast is dying a miserable death. It's a forlorn entity with a battered ego and bruised facade, as sad as a beaten dog. It has crawled pathetically up it's own, soggy-quiche and warm-plonked back passage. And then, some bright upstart (who I guess isn't a real captain even) wants to meet up, in a pub, in the evening. He claims to want to swap books, but I know better - the magical, ingredients of "booze" and "post-8pm" have been cited and on the very same day, there you are, you eager puppies, flocking to him. Floozies, the lot of you.You can drink alcohol in the park, you know, you can drink the stuff before the witching hour too, you could bloody well swap your b@astard books (as if I have time to read!) across a plate of sausage rolls, tomorrow in the American Garden. And then I could have at least some adult company whilst I tucked into a wet cheese sandwich and drunk some insipid no-alcoholic elixir whilst I shout "no" at the children.Right I'm off to post on the "why having kids is the best thing ever" thread before watching another 15 episodes of the Fimbles......... TillieTrotter
Ah bless you Ed, I thought the picnic was tomorrow? I might make that also and bring my books or have you flounced out never to return? Peckhamgatecrasher
Be reasonable Citizen Ed, we're in the middle of a test to try and salvage some honour - of course it's going to rain tomorrow and the picnic will be off anyway. Asset
Ed, the forcast is good for tomorrow. A bag of crisps and a bottle of wine in the park sounds good. Resurrect the thread.
