people keep telling me how simple on the surface it is (Super Smas Bros) but how many layers of depth there are.. I'm never convinced

Wii time is going to be sorely lacking in coming weeks with Fable 2 and Fallout 3 however (plus someone gave me The Orange Box for my birthday - woo hoo)

The Joys of 86420

Some people get no problems at all and others can open a room but no one can connect or they can't connect to an open room... if you get 86420 then read on...

According to some sources, it is in fact down to your wireless router and the following recommendations are to be found - Follow in order if you can and test at each stage

1. Do an update of the firmware on your router (remember to back it up first)

2. Change the channel of your wireless router to 1 or 11 (it seems that the Wii prefers these for some reason with 1 being optimal)

3. Put your Wii on a Static address at least 11 higher then your router (i.e. 192.168.1.12) (this needs to occur both on the Wii and the Router)

4. forward all available UDP ports, usually 1 to 65534, to the IP address that you have assigned your Nintendo Wii. You do this in the port forwarding section of your router.

5. Provide the Wii with some compatitable DNS servers. Go to https://www.opendns.com/start?device=nintendo-wii and follow the instructions on there.

6. If above fails to help then open up a DMZ for the wii on the router (allows it to by-pass the router firewall) or just disable the firewall on the router

Hopefully if you follow these instructions in order then it should solve the problem for you (no promises like)

Finally I have to say sorry for not appearing for the races last night, a Jacket Potato with Ragu sauce on it was calling my name stronger then the Wii did :-S

I was getting this error but after a short time I stopped getting it. The workd rounds suggest that it is router based and thus connection based but I am not convinced as the connection must be their in order to see your friends and attempt to join them in the first place. The Nintendo site says that this is often just a temporary issue and resolves itself. My guess it is actually a server issue i.e. a problem at the server that manages the connections.
I'd connected many times with no problems, and then suddenly got it the other night for the first time. And then it went away again, all without my touching any settings at my end. This really makes me doubt very strongly that it's anything to do with routers. I reckon it's all at the server end.
I had to do a lot of research as I always got it, and now witht he work arounds, I don't .... it is true that sometimes there is a server issue, but for a lot of people, the above workaround solves the problem. I think it also depends on how games firendly your router and firewall is !!

The whole connectivity side of the Wii sounded dreadful compared to a 360 before I got myself a Wii

Now I know it's dreadful compared to etc etc

Downloading software means I have to stare at a screen for 15-20 minutes and not be able to do anything else on it?? It's 2008 ninty - sort it!

Sorry, putting this post on 2 threads to get responses.

Has anyone had trouble getting gamecube games to work on Wii? Keep putting different disks in, and it just won't read them! Very annoying, as I have loads of Gamecube games I want to revisit / start!!!

Could just set the gamecube up again, but that's beside the point! :X

    • I think Watsons General Telegraph do two margaritas  for £13 every Thursday. The Great Exhibition also does a margarita deal on a Thursday: https://www.greatexhibition.pub/new-events-1 I've not tried either deal yet.
    • We first used Aaron's services for a badly damaged wall that had gone back to the brickwork due to water ingress from the bay window. We found Aaron initially through recommendation and were very fortunate to do so as we already had a couple of quotes from trades found online that were just ridiculous, clearly just a rip off, so not sure what we would of done without that recommendation. We have just had more work completed by him, two walls skimmed and more comprehensive work where the brickwork was exposed around the fireplace. The wall above the fireplace was the original plaster finish and in good condition but the original plan was to have the whole wall replastered but we couldnt get the tv off the wall bracket so asked Aaron if he could just plaster up to the tv, not ideal but not much choice. Aaron didnt have any issue with that atall and more than happy to do it. Amazingly the join between the new plaster and old plaster is invisible. Perfect feather edge finish.  Aaron is very pleasant natured, he turns up on time, he doesnt mess about and gets on with the job. He works in a very clean manner. He doesnt try and inflate the job to make it more expensive. We found him to be extremely competitively priced. Both jobs have been finished to an excellent standard. The finish is so smooth its like glass. We will certainly be using his services again in the future.     Aaron Manser 07773 410661
    • Yes, and now there's a leak further down Barry Road. Two men from Thames came and stood there looking at it and then went away. Over 24 hours later water still pouring out and no sign of any action to repair
