Alan Medic
I've a dilemma. Mrs Medic's PC is probably nearing the end of it life. She thinks she wants an Tablet. She uses PC for email, browsing, Skype (v.important),some document usage, photo's.Will a tablet do everything and is it better to stick to an Android than an Ipad if you are used to a PC? She has an old MAC but doesn't use it much.Any advice, suggestions please? Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/39424-tablet-or-pc/ Share on other sites
right-clicking
Have you both considered a Windows tablet? Office is built in as is Skype (microsoft own it) Snap on a keyboard and you've a laptop! A tablet could replace a PC but with some limitations, Windows Tablets come in two editions one is limited to only running "apps" (RunTime or RT) the other will run full blown programs as well. The apps will run on Windows 8 PC's and Phones and any purchases allow installation on 5 devices. This is nice! http://www.nokia.com/gb-en/phones/tablet/lumia2520/Is it better to stick to an Android than an Ipad if you are used to a PC? With either you'll have to learn a new Operating system, If you have a android phone you might have an easier transition. But they are quite easy to learn.Hope this helps Right-Clicking Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/39424-tablet-or-pc/#findComment-704142 Share on other sites
Loz
Tablets are good, right up until you need significant use of the keyboard or the mouse. For the casual browser/emailer/tweeter they are fine. For serious use, get a laptop. Jeremy
I'm tempted by one the the windows 8 hybrid tablet/laptops. You can pick up the HP Envy x2 for under ?500 now. Spec and battery life aren't great though... Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/39424-tablet-or-pc/#findComment-704276 Share on other sites
StraferJack
I haven't seen any good reviews of hybrid tablet/laptop. The requirements for both things are mutually exclusive in key areas - eg a laptop needs a decent screen size (even if only to accomodate a keyboard) , but a tablet needs to be sub 10" to be in any way light enough to useI had to update a website at the weekend - and that is normally the only thing I use the laptop for these days. But even this time I used the tablet with a text editor clientSitting in front of a proper desktop/laptop with screen/keyboard/mouse is definitely the only option sometimes. But less and lessMore often than not, the speed with which I can open a tablet and get something done/checked/viewed is far, far better than waiting for any windows device to get it's act togetherI use a bluetooth keyboard for typing with the tablet as well Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/39424-tablet-or-pc/#findComment-704282 Share on other sites

I could live with a 11 inch laptop if the resolution was high enough. ????
The windows 'tablet, looks a classic fail to me....too big to be a decent tablet, too small to be a decent laptop....complete prejudice on my part I've not used one Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/39424-tablet-or-pc/#findComment-704287 Share on other sites

MGolden
More questions - we're buying our 15yo something for Christmas. He's started doing GCSEs and it's about time he had his own computer. Do I go for a laptop or a notebook? Thanks in advance. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/39424-tablet-or-pc/#findComment-704485 Share on other sites
Salsaboy
I've got a Nexus 7 tablet thing. Had it about 6 months and use it more than my laptop now for emailing and sailing the interweb. Peckhamgatecrasher
Go for laptop. I'm using daughter's old netbook at mo - it's ok but laptop more user friendly and bigger screen is easier on the eye.Only advantage of netbook I can see is if you want to take it to lectures to type notes as it is small and lightweight. She upgraded to laptop for uni with an inheritance and much prefers it. MGolden
Thanks all, much appreciated. No need for it to be taken out of the house really so I think we'll go for a laptop.
