Mugging on Athenlay Road

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I'm really sorry to say that a houseguest of ours was mugged at knifepoint outside our flat last night. The attacker made off with his laptop, bag and phon beut luckily our friend was unharmed - just shaken a lot.

If anyone sees a beige, checked satchel ('almost' burberry) in the area, please let me know - the laptop will be long gone, but there were some expensive academic books that he would be delighted to get back. It's possible they were dumped somewhere close by.

Sorry to report, any help appreciated,

all the best

Tom,

I'm really sorry to hear this, very worrying. I am glad your friend was not physically harmed. What time did this happen last night, and was this near the Kelvington Road end of Athenlay or the "church" end of the road?

I will keep a look out for the laptop bag and the books as I live in the area.

Thanks Cathy, nearer the church end, I guess - but we are pretty central. It happened around 6.30pm.

It is worth noting that my friend went to the corner shop for assistance afterwards and said that the staff there were fantastic. Called the police and looked after him.

Is there much of a description?

I wonder if there should be a 'master' mugging and a master 'burglary' thread - so that seemingly isolated or unconnected incidents might actually be linked and fragmented bits of the story/description/themes might be shared.

It is supposed to be a community resource, after all - and the internet allows info, warnings and advice to have a much wider reach than ever possible, even than neighbourhood watch groups.

For example, it's not far from Belvoir Road, with its own thread...might there be something in common. Maybe I'm getting a bit Marple and carried away!

cle, I asked Admin about "pinning" a safety thread to one of the categories or making a separate category. And I've been in touch with Safer Neighbourhood teams about running something on this forum. There seems to be an issue with the way this forum is used and the way people post. It's a bit obscure so I won't try to elaborate

There is usually a link mind - even if it's linked with when

benefit money is paid/sanctions made, events, prison release etc.

I don't think the Police like private investigations however.

Hi - I'm so sorry to hear this; we live on an adjoining road to you. Whilst sweeping at the front of my house the other day, a street cleaner guy actually told me what had happened, as he had bumped into your friend whilst he was looking for his bag. He had managed to find at least one of the text books somewhere around Brenchley Gardens and was looking for your friend. He told me that if I saw your friend to let him know where he had taken them. PM me and I'll let you know. Hope your friend is OK. Awful thing to have happened, especially when you're supposed to be having a nice time staying with friends. Best wishes.

  • 2 months later...
A couple of weeks ago at about 11pm I was walking home after a few shandies at the pub and as I turned into Upland Road a young man (who I had noticed walking parallel to me up Barry Road) shouts at me to stop, then when I did he asks me to run (weird!) and then as he walked up to me he goes into his inside pocket as if going for a knife. I stood still, glared at him, he demanded that I give him ?10, I told him to f*** off (the alcohol fuelled my brave stand) and he walked away...

    • The EDF is social media, and it seems to have met its goals of connecting and engaging the local community. The 'media' part isn't a reference to the BBC, it refers to 'a substance that something grows in, lives in or moves through' as a plural of 'medium'. In the sense that the 'something' is people, then it does the job. Whe it comes to the BBC, the 'something' is information. For the most part the contribution has been positive. However, the downsides are driven by anonymity, and have allowed the worst of human nature to surface.
    • I'm pretty sure it was still Le Chardon until 2008, maybe later. They also had The Green on East Dulwich Road, which is now Kokum. Service could be a bit 'French' in both places, but the food was good. It then had an incarnation selling quiches or something similar. It was a bit esoteric. The place where everything went against them was Saucy Chip, which was the old Curry Cabin. It's now Joe & The Juice. SE22 Bar was there before Franklin's, which I reckon opened just before the Millennium. I've got a vague recollection an (East) Dulwich Brasserie/Bistro or something similar around there at some point. The photo of the Dulwich Cafe above reminded me of when they changed the name and sign to 'Cafe Dulwich' to reflect how the area was going upmarket.  They didn't change the menu or decor at all. Just the sign.
    • 😥 Sorry, somehow my post above was duplicated instead of being merged with this one, and I can't delete all of the duplicated bits. Many moons ago, we used to have fairly regular "Forum Drinks", where forum members could meet up and get to know each other in real life. We met in a different local pub each time, and sometimes had sticky labels with our forum names on. A lot of those original people have moved away, but it has occasionally crossed my mind that it would be nice to start that up again and be able to put more faces to names (not that I ever remember either faces OR names)  Or maybe it is still happening but I'm kept out of the loop 🤣  Many of those pubs we used to go to have now changed out of all recognition, of course. Also there seem to be more families with young children in the area, for whom evening drinks would be difficult. I don't have time to do it, but if anybody else was up for organising it I'd be happy to help. It mainly involves deciding on a date, I imagine trying to get a rough idea of how many people would be interested,  and then booking a suitable sized space in a local pub and telling people about it on here  I don't know how it was arranged before, but maybe some of the longer standing forum users may know. I just used to turn up!
    • Yup, it's 15 year project (I think some elements of it started a year or so ago).  Imagine how annoyed Earl will be when they find out that the new Teaco superstore planned has underground parking for 530 cars....
