Apologies if you have already read this in another area, someone kindly suggested I might get a wider audience here.

Hi, I am new to this forum and searching for any information about my family's history. I live in West Yorkshire so have difficulty in accessing it other than online.

My great grandfather was Frederick Harman, born in Camberwell. He fought in WW1 then moved here. I would love to find information about his siblings and find living relatives if possible. His father was William Harman and lived at Fernie House, Dog Kennel Hill for the last few years of his life (he died in the 1940s). Frederick had a half brother called Albert who married Emily, and they had a son also called Albert. I know that he lived at 1 Fernie House also for most of the 1940s and 50s. I assume that Fernie House is no longer there as I can't see it on any recent maps.

Frederick had a sister called Jane who I believe married a Samuel Garbutt in 1921, and they had several children.

If anyone knows of any information that might help me find Harman folk from the area I would be most grateful.

Regards

There is still a Fernie House in the estate, on Quorn Road here:

And picture of Fernie House attached from Google Street View.

Good luck with your research.

Actually, if you're interested, the railings that you can see in the foreground of the photo are supposed to be second world war stretchers - more detail here:

    • It’s a lovely place to live.  If you are worried and want to compare with other areas from a crime perspective the stats are available online:  https://www.police.uk/pu/your-area/metropolitan-police-service/performance/compare-your-area/?tc=E05009317 Good luck!
    • There's been a spate of phone snatching around East Dulwich station and along Lordship Lane. But don't let that put you off the area, these things come and go. I've never had an issue late at night in the areas you talk about and I've been around here for 18yrs (before I moved I had the same concerns as you). Go visit your areas late at night at different times for your own peace of mind (I did)
