Hello my lovely forumites

I need to take my nan-in-law for a roast on Sunday and would like to go somewhere local.. She likes it to be all proper old stylee and not anything fancy or new just meat and veg..

It would be nice if it had a veggo option too but that is not compulsory as I will just eat the vegetables..

thanks dudes

Do the Montpelier! You'll always get a seat ... not that old school to be honest but I don't think it'll fail you. Or the Rye...

I love the Hern but the fear of kiddy infestation on a sunday sends me elsewhere.

EDOldies - Does Le Moulin do decent grub? It does look 70'stastic but I'm always up for proper grub!

Damn I'm hungry!

Good call, it was great!

I've been told that the White Horse is quite nice, not sampled it my self yet though.

Nun's Head - definitely the best old-skool roast around...nice atmosphere too.

The Rye - great food, but they do sometimes do variations on their veggies which I really like but couldn't be regarded as traditional. And their service can be hit and miss on a Sunday depending how busy they are. They actually physically moved our table and chairs in the middle of a meal once. And without much grace either.

edited because my predictive text on my web'n'walk just shames me.

Where is this place please?

I tried the Rye one Sunday for a roast dinner and thought it was exceedingly expensive for what it was. ?11.50 for indifferent chicken and veggies. They had red wine gravey with the chicken which was very peculiar. Would be interested in trying something else off the menue - any recommendations?

I think so, his fish (almost any fish he cooks) is really good. Sometimes the beefs a bit well done for my taste but other than that I've not had a bad meal there. As I say it might suit an older generation rather than a younger one.

    • Did you rent the property via an agent?  You should have been provided with an EPC and Gas Safety Cert when you took the property. Strange that the Landlord didn't do a check-in report as they wouldn't have a leg to stand on if they wanted to claim part of the deposit? If you are leaving anyway in a matter of days, I wouldn't bother about the EPC, it's not about safety just efficiency.

He is clearly very knowledgeable, and was able to offer suggestions and make tweaks with ease when my odd Victorian building threw us curveballs.  Gabi provides an incredible level of support and reassurance, replying promptly to all queries and concerns. As a team they are incredibly well organised, and both dates and costs are clear. John has a great relationship with Howdens, securing me a great discount on the kitchen, and sorting any issues that arose quickly and calmly. After dealing with a number of aggressive workmen who overcharged me and turned up as and when they wanted, John and his team were an absolute breath of fresh air; friendly, courteous, hardworking and reliable.  I would wholeheartedly recommend Top Marx to anyone looking to have a new kitchen installed, I truly could not be more thrilled with the results!
