adonirum
@ KK Def not what I am advocating -no punishment- after all I started by stating "Well said DulwichFox". I would, in fact, advocate the strongest possible sentence. I was merely pointing out and agreeing with @Sue that this course of behaviour does indeed happen, as in the same manner appeasement also leads to further offending because the perpetrator will see themselves as having "got away with it". I was trying to point out the completely perverse, chip-on-the-shoulder that these types often have, and it probably stays with them from the cradle to the grave, this "I hate authority, I hate society, I hate people, I hate myself" attitude that we all owe them something/ a living. Jeremy Kyle fodder for the future I strongly suspect. Sue
Well, we've got no idea why this particular person scratched these cars, unless somebody posting on here knows otherwise. I don't think it's possible to generalise, and I think there are many many factors involved in what should be the "punishment" blah blah. There are moral, social and psychological issues, aren't there, as well as legal issues.People probably do degrees in it :)ETA: And I'm not saying I wouldn't be very pissed off indeed if somebody scratched my car, however I would also probably want to kill anybody who harmed my daugher or my grandchildren, but that doesn't mean I believe in killing people legally as a punishment or "deterrent" ...... KidKruger
Well it's a bit like the shit-on-the-floor-in-the-mens-loos thread. But the focus strays to why it may have been done, the state the person was in, etc etc.It is NOT acceptable.A village I stayed in for a few months in India, this kid would have been beaten within an inch of his life by locals, then his parents would have had a (as they call it) "sound thrashing", then the police would have been advised of the crime and money would come very quickly back to the car owners until they were happy.Obviously I don't advocate this extreme response, but the focus of attention I wholly am aligned to. And guess what ? There ain't no cars keyed in Thul, UP. (to be fair, there's probably only like 4 cars, but hopefully you get my point..) adonirum
@Sue You state...we've no idea why scratced cars...not possible to generalise.....don't leap to conclusions....but you probably hit the nail on the head when you stated...yes he might be a nasty little shit... remember the original posting mentions a total of eleven vehicles. How can this be anything other than unacceptable, as @KK wrote in his last post. I accept and take on board all your other view points, but the extent of the offending ie: the total numbers involved, surely give us the answer. A sustained course of action taking a period of time rather than a one off aberration ? Unless it was an accident, I don't frankly care why the little scrote scratched the cars. He needs to be punished and/or treated/helped and/or make retributions. If he has problems at home, then at the very least he needs to be sent around to the victims and apologise and see if they are willing to accept it.I know it is a little reductio ad absurdum, but would you be willing to give him the same leeway if he'd raped someone? EDherb
So, it's ?1,700 + VAT for me (?350 excess) and more in the region of 30 cars (not 11).Perhaps the wise words of the great, late Mel Smith can provide some guidance... KidKruger
"So, it's ?1,700 + VAT for me (?350 excess) and more in the region of 30 cars (not 11)."This cost x30, or however many cars are damaged, should be the parents' to bear. Within their own family they can contain the connotations (cost) of the crime. Shouldn't be for the victims to make good. KidKruger
well put it this way, there ain't so much theft and vandalism in Dubai. Not because there's nothing to nick or vandalise, but because there's a deterrent.NO (before obvious comments ensue, yawn) I am not 'saying we should be exactly like Dubai'.YES I am recognising we have a weak attitude towards this kind of crime where the honest taxpaying hardworking chap gets dicked-over and the criminal gets SFA punishment. As Aristotle would have said, "it's total bollox".
