Agree, and what about films shown at Dulwich park, above the EDT etc. Why is a Cineworld chain acceptable on the Lane when other chains are not? Turn the place into something needed and useful like, say a Police station. Local Cllr courting chain stores and chain cinemas is beyond mandate.

A cinema in that space seems entirely out of proportion to the space and without suitable public transport links, such that parking for local residents is likely to become even harder.

The Ritzy is right by the tube, train and multiple bus lines, whilst this location has just three bus routes all going to the same stop.

What measures are going to be taken to ensure that the surrounding streets are not clogged up? We already have extremely heavy non resident usage due to the proximity to North Cross and the shops on Lordship Lane as well as the thoughtlessness of some of the local businesses parking excessive amounts of vehicles and using public streets as some sort of extension to their storage and manufacturing requirements.

There's nothing wrong with Cinema Paradiso (now defunct) or the very occasional screenings above the EDT and in the park, but there's no comparison between them and a 'full time' cinema. The problem for independents is having to show big movies to pay the bills. In my experience, a chain like the Curzon is more likely to show 'art' films than a struggling independent.

In fact, how many 'independent' cinemas are there in London with regular programming. The Riverside, the Phoenix... er...

Yes we should prevent any progress whatsoever in East Dulwich so as to maintain convenient parking for local residents. If you're a local who doesn't own a car and uses public transport... Tough!

Well, it did for the M&S proposal - so there's a good precedent.

A cinema is generally at its busiest at different times to the high street. So no it's not the same as an M&S.

I very spent some of this evening out with our local Police. We came across two groups of teenagers in the wrong space and frankly with too little to do. A cinema would be a useful contribution toward fixing this type of issue.

xxxxxxx

Depends on whether the cinema will put on stuff the groups of teenagers actually want to see (or can afford to see), no?

Same old moaning about chains and parking.

A cinema on LL would have absolutely no detrimental impact to the shops and restaurants, quite the opposite. The argument doesn't make sense. Comparisons to an occasional pub cinema club are like comparing a swimming pool to a paddling pool in the back garden.

And it seems odd to resent new facilities moving to the area because people want easy parking but at the same time reject a CPZ.

I really find it quite unbelievable that anyone can complain that a cinema, partly owned by a chain is an issue. Pret a manger, owner by McD, still doesn't do burgers, despite assumptions it would.

Jaguar / Land Rover, now owned by an Indian tin can maker, seems to be turning out better cars under their stewardship? Who'd have thought it?

The cinema on LL will have a fantastic impact on two areas - firstly, it will bring peole into ED, and they will make a night of it, so the bars & restaurants will see a marked upturn in business, thus benefiting the local area in terms of jobs. The hall will also bring more balance to LL and more people to the middle section, reducing some of the crush on the top section.

I have spoken to maybe 1/2 dozen locals about this who were not aware and all have been ecstatic. Even more than when they heard iceland was shutting.

ahem.

TJ pleas stop with all this common sense stuff. Why oh why would we want a small chain cinema coming to our area, creating jobs and increasing footfall on LL? Making the bars and restaurants busier and more successful and making the place shine like a beacon on the night out map once more. What kind of insane idea is this and why would anyone with half an ounce of common sense touch it with a barge poll? .... Said the average EDF forumite. ;)

Louisa.

There are two cinemas within 20 and 30mins from here.

Any new jobs created will be minimum wage or less, and no career path.

Any knock on jobs will be the same.

Any extra 'spenders' will increase liklihood of major chains ruining the Lane.

Apart from lining the pockets of the already overflowing rich pub landlords, (who are not struggling but coining it in), any extra custom will increase drunkeness and anti social behaviour to residents, lead to later opening hours of pubs etc thus creating more grief for local residents. Lambeth council considering curtailing late drinking etc in Clapham for some of reasons above.

@unlurked, you seem to be somewhat focused on the downsides of a building is simply showing films that (mostly entirely sober) people want to see. Whenever I go to the cinema, I somehow don't get anywhere near as drunk as when I spend the evening at one of the many pubs on Lordship Lane.

Just counter balancing the views of the posters that are focusing on the upsides . . . .is all.

unlurked all you ever do is 'counterbalance' what the OP is saying of any topic.

It's a bit boring, to be honest. Just say what you think - the purpose of a forum is not always to vent spleen or, 'counterbalance'.

I agree that a cinema is generally speaking a place where we can all go, and not get tanked up, and bring a load of customers and jobs to the area.

Having loved Cinema Paradiso years ago, a small 'proper' cinema would be amazing - for everyone.

lighten up.

'Tis my opinion. Don't read it then. Also there is the fleapit in Peckham that the ED film club use. Further reason why a cinema is not needed, nor should it have been wooed by 1 local politico. Nor will it keep yoof off the streets. Arguments for it are ridiculous IMO.

Perhaps the USP of the the new cinema is that it will facilitate getting 'tanked up' while watching cool new films?

Unlurked - do you have any suggestions as to what should be done with St Thomas More Hall? Presumably something that doesn't attract people to the area, either during the day (lest the "chains" notice the success of LL) or the night (to avoid marauding drunkards). A 'shop' like the one next to the butchers? some inexplicable council office that never seems to be open (like Foxton's used to be)? You're right it's a tricky one - maybe we're better off with the Hall remaining empty.
