Removing railway sleepers

Has anyone experience of taking railway sleepers OUT of a garden? We have six horrid slippy rotting evil things as our patio and are pondering getting rid. But I can't help thinking its going to be a grim old job, will leave a big hole that I'm not sure what to fill with plus they've got to be taken through the house....

Anyone who's done this and has any tips - all would be welcome.
