I have never bought fabric :) If I needed some I am thinking this wouldnt be my shop of choice!!! That said I am curious... Maybe I should take the dogs ;-)

I went in there only needing a tiny amount of fabric, so asked where he kept the remnants. He was incredibly stroppy and sarky with me, as if it was a stupid question to ask. I'd assumed it was an off day until I was chatting to a group of friends and found that everyone of us who had been in there had had some kind of bad experience with him. He obviously doesn't need the money, so I'm going to keep my trade for the tiny little warren of a place just by Peckham Rye Station.

How strange... I know the guy you're talking about, but we had a very different experience. Went browsing for curtain fabric, he was really helpful, and he also came round to our house to measure the windows and give advice. We haven't actually bought anything from there yet as he didn't have what we wanted, but I found him to be OK. Very chatty, talked a lot about his little girl when he saw I had young kids. My only comment would be that he was slightly sleazy, but I figured that was just a ploy to sell curtains to the desperate housewives of ED ;-)

Makes me worry that if we do go ahead and order curtains from him we'll end up regretting it!? Anyone had a positive experience?

I have to say we have had nothing but good experiences with this guy.

He made the curtains for my daughters room, came round, measured, made them, came back and fitted them.

Was really helpful with the choosing and let us keep the books overnight (came back and picked them up the next day to save us a trip into the shop)

Not only this, he was really helpful when have been back in for a table cloth and gave me the off cut as well.

He had a good range of fabrics and made some nice, reasonably priced curtains.

Hmm this does sound like an ad for the place in light of the above comments but we had such a different experience I just wanted to say...;-)

The bloke is a total tool.

Have had to use the shop a number of times (do tell me more about the place in Peckham Rye...) and every time he's been rude, obnoxious and more than a bit slimey. I wonder whether there's any coincidence that the (very) few people who have had positive experiences have had pricey made-to-measure jobs done. Perhaps my requirement for press studs and invisible thread are just not enough to warrant even a modicum of customer service. Just a thought.

The 'dog-wee' story beggars belief! I have given the shop a wide berth since having trouble buying knitting needles a year ago - the man apparently knew better than me what kind I wanted (I made the mistake of turning down plastic/bamboo when he didn't have the size I wanted in metal) - then he said he wasn't fussed about the business because 'we're only talking about ?3.95'. I did try to give him some feedback about his customer service - er, but that didn't go down very well. So I've spent an interesting ten minutes following this thread reading similar tales about his unappealing manner! Back to John Lewis haberdashery for me ....

Interesting thread, I have been in there once or twice and he's seemed okaay(italics denote slight tremulousness), but have heard before of his bizarre customer services. Anyway, I was walking past there a couple of months ago, dressed up a bit as going out for a meal. He was getting out of his car as I walked past and looked me in the eys and then spat on the pavement right next to me. Now some could say he was going to spit anyway but at the time I felt really uncomfortable.

He took the phrase "Monsieur I spit on your visage" literally!B)

mmm he's totally cool and very good at what he does. He probably does not like people standing in his shop for hours trying to work out how to spend ?2.

I think if your dog pissed outside anyone's shop they have a right to be a bit stroppy - try it outside Moxtons or William rose's and see what happens.

And how would you prevent this happening? Or even better - how to clear it up?

no they wouldn't. If it was inside the shop then yes I'd agree with you but outside on the pavement is a different matter.

Oh sorry bob i really thought you meant it. If you ever get that data together i would not mind a look though.

One persons good business sense is another owners "take you 6 buggies and 4 glasses of water and 1 expresso out of my tiny struggling cafe as your making me go mental.....Ccccccccybil !! "

i think you will find that the front part of the shop is just that part of the shop......a bit like your front garden if you have one or your paved over driveway if you live off LL.

As for stopping it , your the one with the dog. " oops sorry i cannot serve you right now, that dogs glazing eyes tell me its about to let loose outside my lovely shop, i must don my safety bib and a bucket and stop it while its owner stares at cloud formations above LL.

I've had a think about it and stand by my original estimate, based on sixty years of adult life.

Curtains and making of for a decent-sized room: ?750

3 rooms with curtains: ?2250

Curtains changed every 20 years

Total ?6750

Blinds, per room (averaged for 1-2 windows) - ?100

3 rooms with blinds ?300

Blinds changed every 7 years.

Total ?2550

Re-upholstery of occasional item of furniture: ?750

One item re-upholstered every 15 years

Total - ?3000

One cushion/soft thing every other year: ?25

Total - ?750

Total ?13000.

Allowing for inflation over the next 60 years.. roughly ?20,000

Obviously if you'd prefer shit curtains etc then you can cut-down somewhat on the above figures.

Now BOB - that is what i am talking about - Big score there my friend. Brilliant.

I concede he must be flaming mad let's all get our dogs and piss him to kingdom come, he'll need a little fabric boat to row out of there when we are finished.......CHARGE !!!!!!!!!!

    • Thank you. Yes we scanned him last time, he is neutered & chipped. We asked neighbours who were feeding him to keep him in as, owner said she wasn't back till following day. That night whilst he was kept in, Gladys came back. The owner lives on a street who's garden  backs onto my friends garden. We asked neighbour that kept him in for night, to not feed him anymore. The owner said not long after she got him, he went out January, never went back till December! I did say so you don't want the cat, she said yes she does but she can't lock him in. I suggested she leaflet all houses who's back gardens back onto hers, to say to stop feeding him. She didn't do it. So until people stop feeding him, he will be a problem as he obviously doesn't want to go home and all the time she never saw him, there was no posters up looking for him, so it's one of those situations! He is a beautiful fluffy black and white and is enormous. Don't know what the solution would be if owner not bothered. Celia hammond overflowing, even kitten season was early this year. Can't take a owned cat though I'm sure he isn't happy. I'm hoping Gladys and Doris will go back home if he isn't loitering. Yes their owner does spray him with water but has little impact. It is a real problem and a worry that they are too frightened to go home and may travel further away. That is the real worry. Will keep post updated.
    • Hi, I’m looking for a small garden table and 2 chairs used but in good condition, ideally one you’d like to get rid of 😊 Chairs need to be sturdy so that she can sit on these safely!  Thanks in advance for her!
    • Is what true? That the student units part of this development that hasn't yet been built is going to fall vacant because there's such a collapse in the number of students in London that they can't rent the units out, and then the Labour government is going to appropriate them to house them asylum seekers? Is that what you're asking is true?
