fernado
The other bus thread prompted this... anyone know why the 176 makes such a blinking racket compared to the others? Especially when going uphill? Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/38218-dull-bus-question/ Share on other sites

Burbage
It's because the bus and the relevant legislation were both badly designed. Most of the noise, which breaks the regulations, comes from the cooling fans at the back which apparently get stuck on full blast thanks to some cack-handed engineering. The solution that the makers found was simply to disconnect the fans on the one they sent for noise testing, so now they've got a certificate that says they hardly make a sound. And that is all that matters. Both Westminster and Kensingtonandchelsea have been fuming about this for years, but there's apparently nothing that can be done. fernado
Thanks DF and Burbage - very helpful! I think the 40 has the same problem. I shudder every time one wheezes its way up te hill towards The Plough... ianr
Here's a 2007 Usenet uk.transport.london post that includes a letter from TfL about Volvo B7TL buses - which I think includes the 176: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/uk.transport.london/YrEmfvSNzCA Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/38218-dull-bus-question/#findComment-693861 Share on other sites

mikeb
is there really nothing that can be done about this? There is clearly a problem, they are unbelievably loud. 85dB is apparently the same as a tractor cab. I would have said that the buses were more like a road drill >100 dB http://www.hse.gov.uk/noise/advice.htm Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/38218-dull-bus-question/#findComment-699092 Share on other sites
