miket53
I have recently been doing some indexing work at the National Archives and found this record of the rescue of people from bombed buildings on East Dulwich Road. The records are HO250 which are recommendations for gallantry awards for civilians. nxjen
Thanks for posting this, puts our 21st century concerns into perspective. I see from the Metropolitan Police Gallantry Awards 1939 - 1945( http://www.historybytheyard.co.uk/gallantry_list_1939-1945.htm ) Constable Whitmore was awarded the recommended George Medal. Mugglesworth
The Gallantry Awards list for 1944 (link posted by nxjen above) also includes details of a 13-hour armed siege in Barry Road, for the resolution of which three policemen received awards. Peckhamgatecrasher
I'm guessing what we now know as Kings on the Rye nightclub which was converted into the white block of flats on the corner of Peckham Rye and East Dulwich Road. Ted Max
"Kings Arms" = pub formerly on site of what was known later as Kings on the Rye, MP. (now flats - with a bus stop bearing the KotR name)This is an 1862 map showing the pub at that junction. http://www.mappalondon.com/london/south-east/peckham-rye.jpg (From http://www.mappalondon.com/london/south-east/map-london.htm) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/38208-bombs-on-east-dulwich-27121940/#findComment-693870 Share on other sites

aquarius moon
That picture is so cool. Love seeing how it used to be.Does anyone have any old pics of Stuart Rd, Nunhead?Apparently there used to be a row of shops next to 'The Ivy House' (where the flats are) but they were all destroyed by a bomb during WW2. Laur
Great photo, I too can remember the Kings Arms - I think it was possibly in the 1980s/ 1990s - popular pub and club whereby drinkers would travel from outside the area to visit. There was a sea fish/cockle stall outside if my memory serves me right. Michael Palaeologus
Thanks all. The Kings Arms looks better than the Kings on the Rye ever did or indeed the current building.
