I'm fed up of businesses not following the simple rules.

Especially the rule about stating your ED address.

It's usually broken by businesses outside ED trying to sneak in.

"Blaaa, but we provide a service to people in ED", "Blaa, but our customers are in ED". You sound like BT, or Sky or similar.

So someday very soon I'm going to look through the first four pages of the business section. If businesses have broken the rules repeatedly then, as them there rules say, I'm going to delete all their ads and ban them.

Isn't it obvious? It's a local forum for local residents. Other areas have their own forums so why not advertise there? It's about supporting your local community.

Well, no it isn't obvious which is why I asked.

Off the top of my head I've used a car valet and a cleaner that I found recommended on the EDF, both of whom I subsequently recommended myself. Neither of them turned out to be local to ED but they are within a couple of miles. ED didn't have a mobile valet then, maybe it does now. I found it a useful recommendation and wanted to pass it on but maybe that was the wrong thing to do....H

Yes, it is very obvious. There have to be some limitations on advertisers. Admin doesn't get paid and can't monitor every single post on a daily basis. As far as I know, there's no rule against recommending people from elsewhere but they're talking about people advertising their services by posting.

You replied for me, thanks callie and edcam.

To confirm, the odd recommendation for companies outside ED are allowed, but that privilege should not be abused. It's the non-ED companies advertising on here that are getting tiring.

Administrator; I am with HelBel for certain businesses.

Many handymen I have used at my home have been based outside "Dulwich"; but are close enough to regularly serve the area. I agree it shouldnt be a free for all, but dont delete those who genuinely provide a good regular service to the area. Equally, I think the forum should be for local businesses only.

As you say, its a case by case basis.

Given the ever rising cost of living in ED, and rising rents, it's a bit of a struggle for people to live here on a low income right now. I know you have to have some limits, but surely people operating from nearby but not exactly SE22 are local too?
  • Administrator

How on earth are we meant to police that?

They provide a good regular service, let's allow them.

They only provide a good service every two out of five times, they're not allowed.

That builder's in Brixton, is he allowed?

That is on Franklin Grove SE25, is he allowed?

Where is the boundary?

Sorry, I understand what you're saying but taking into account the resources behind the forum we have to keep it simple.

Hi Administrator,

I've just seen this thread and was wondering why businesses must be registered in ED to promote themselves here. I have a masseause visit me each weekend (she travels from Battersea but gives me an amazing massage at a great price). I get my food delivered from Occado because it makes sense to me to get it delivered and not traipse down to the high street.

What is the purpose of the forum? A communist "lets just shop/support our local area just because that's what we do", or is it about connecting residents and sharing tips on how we can and do find services in London? If it's the former would I be banned from asking about RAC versus AA?

This all seems very petty to me. I am blessed to have the money to live in ED, however I personally want to mix with the best people for the job, not just those with enough cash to live in the area.

With the utmost respect, I do take exception to the elitist stance you appear to be taking. Look forward to hearing your thoughts though.

Purpose of the forum is to be a fun and useful resource for the people (and businesses) of East Dulwich.

No it's not Communist.

You can ask about the AA vs RAC in the Lounge.

Read the above messages for why I have an 'elitist' stance.

Lets face it Google is AMAZING *coughs* I'm sure if you're really looking for something that is not in ED you'll be able to find it with a little bit of time taken using the internet (which you're currently using to access the EDF...)

You wouldn't access the NHS website to enquire about petrol prices now would you?

I live in East Dulwich, and run my business from East Dulwich, and only ever post relevant posts. Plus I sent a private message last week to make sure I was not breaking any rules but I still have been deleted. I work so hard , I am really upset about this .
  • Administrator

The very first line from the rules page:

I'm pretty strict when it comes to this section of the forum so please don't complain when you break the rules and I enforce them. - Admin

You didn't put your address in your post (doesn't have to be in the subject line).

You're joking ! I edited it when I realised that last week! And I asked you if that was ok . You have no idea how much upset you have caused me , I worked for a year to gain a small reputation on here, may not mean anything to you but meant the world to me .
  • Administrator

No I am not joking. Of the following three adverts (temporarily reinstated so I can provide evidence to defend myself again) there is no address.

Yes but I did put it on there as soon as I realised what my mistake was. I am sorry , I wasn't intentionally not following guidelines , and I did message to make sure that was where I was going wrong after. Please can I have my post re-instated, it's taken me a long time to build up my recommendations.
  • 2 weeks later...

I know that it isn't my place to say this and admins' ruies etc BUT I do think there is some degree of risk in small, one-man businesses being forced to put their address on any listings.

I completely understand if you have a registered office or a storefront but if you work from home, or operate your business from there you are essentially also putting your home address out for everyone to see. I'm a East Dulwich based photographer and it would be great to work with more local peeps but I don't really want to post my home address up here, and I'm sure those with valuable tools or other equipment might be equally reluctant... Especially as about 50% of posts on the forum are about crime in the area...

    • Thanks for your message — I actually took the time to look into what CityHive does before posting my original comment, and I’d encourage anyone with questions to do the same. Yes, the Companies House filings are overdue — but from what I’ve gathered, this seems likely to be an accountant or admin issue, not some sign of ill intent. A lot of small, community-based organisations face challenges keeping up with formalities, especially when they’re focused on immediate needs like food distribution. Let’s not forget CityHive is a not-for-profit, volunteer-powered CIC — not a corporate machine. As for the directors, people stepping down or being replaced is often about capacity or commitment — which is completely normal in the voluntary and community sector. New directors are sometimes appointed when others can no longer give the time. It doesn’t automatically mean bad governance — it just means people’s circumstances change. CityHive’s actual work speaks volumes. They buy most of the food they distribute — fresh produce, essential groceries, and shelf-stable items — and then deliver it to food banks, soup kitchens, and community projects across London. The food doesn’t stay with CityHive — it goes out to local food hubs, and from there, directly to people who need it most. And while yes, there may be a few paid staff handling logistics or admin, there’s a huge volunteer effort behind the scenes that often goes unseen. Regular people giving their time to drive vans, sort donations, load pallets, pack food parcels — that’s what keeps things running. And when people don’t volunteer? Those same tasks still need to be done — which means they have to be paid for. Otherwise, the whole thing grinds to a halt. As the need grows, organisations like CityHive will inevitably need more support — both in people and funding. But the bigger issue here isn’t one small CIC trying to make ends meet. The real issue is the society we live in — and a government that isn’t playing its part in eradicating poverty. If it were, organisations like CityHive, The Felix Project, City Harvest, FareShare, and the Trussell Trust wouldn’t need to exist, let alone be thriving. They thrive because the need is growing. That’s not a reflection on them — it’s a reflection on a broken system that allows people to go hungry in one of the richest cities in the world. If you're in doubt about what they’re doing, go check their Instagram: @cityhivemedia. You’ll see the real organisations and people receiving food, sharing thanks, and showing how far the impact reaches. Even Southwark Foodbank has received food from CityHive — that alone should speak volumes. So again — how does any of this harm you personally? Why spend time trying to discredit a group trying to support those who are falling through the cracks? We need more people lifting others up — not adding weight to those already carrying the load.
    • Well, this is very disappointing. Malabar Feast  has changed its menu again. The delicious fish curry with sea bass no longer exists. There is now a fish dish with raw mango, which doesn't appeal. I had dal and spinach instead, which was bland (which I suppose I could/should have predicted). One of my visitors had a "vegetable Biriani" which contained hardly any vegetables. Along with it came two extremely tiny pieces of poppadom in a large paper bag.   This was embarrassing, as I had been singing Malabar's praises and recommending we ordered from there. The other mains and the parathas were OK, but I doubt we will be ordering from there again. My granddaughters wisely opted for Yard Sale pizzas, which were fine. Has anybody else had a similar recent poor (or indeed good!)  experience at Malabar Feast?
    • Another recommendation for Silvano. I echo everything the above post states. I passed first time this week with 3 minors despite not starting to learn until my mid-30s. Given the costs for lessons I have heard, he's also excellent value.
    • Hi just got a player so looking for tapes  pm me thanks
