ED Garden Costs- madness!

I've got a typical small mid terreaced house in ED with a courtyard garden less than 6x6m. I want some flags and a bit of turf and some planters built out of sleepers. No levelling work.

Just got a quote for 10k and nearly fainted. Are these the prices people are paying in ED for landscaping? I feel like the world's gone mad.

?10k sounds way over the top, unless you're planning to pave it with marble. We used a guy called Nigel, who wasn't the cheapest, but did a great job. I don't have his number but he was referred to us by Andy, who posts on here as Spoiltdog:

Try Victor the handyman http://www.007handyman.co.uk/3.html - we used him for similar work following many recommendations for him on EDF and were really pleased with the work and the price. I can't remember how much it was exactly but I do remember that our starting budget was a small fraction of what you've been quoted elsewhere and Victor was well within budget.

Thanks KK :)

They actually do want the work. When I said thanks but no thanks they sent through an unsolicited revised quote with cheaper flags and they made multiple visits to the house. Shockingly, I think this is just how much they charge!

Thanks for the other recommendations everyone :)

Hi. Firstly, thank you Dave for the recommendation. I normally suggest to my customers to get 3 quotes for the work, so you get a balanced view of the cost, plus you get to pick our brains for ideas. I would always say, only use recommended gardeners from the forum. At least you know you are getting someone who knows how to do a good job & will not overcharge you.

I would be happy to come round & give you a quote & hopefully some ideas to keep the cost down & offer a good job, as we have been doing this for 12 years & offer a guarantee on all our work.

Nigel

I like the way he clacks his beak No, none of the others.  Peregrine was in fact the only one I had time for.  Maybe something about him of a proto-Victor Meldrew, or maybe a hint of Gilbert Harding?  The only other one of whom I remember anything is the iirc rather tiresome Katy the Kangaroo. The Annette Mills WikiP article I found interesting.  If you branch out from there you may eventually get to the 'official site' https://www.muffinthemule.co . Your browser might provide a small frisson if you take the necessary Advanced entry route to the latter, with warnings of possible danger if you proceed further.  In fact apparently nothing more than an expired certificate.
    • Commiserations, hope you feel a lot better soon. Nasty things going around, it seems, it's an absolute pain when you can't do anything.
    • Did you phone the actual noise control number? I posted a screenshot of it above on the thread somewhere. If so, they have given you totally wrong information, unless they have recently changed their policy on firework noise. You could complain to the council directly and/or ask your councillor to take it up with them? I was also disturbed by very loud firework noise earlier tonight, and it's over three weeks since 5 November.  It is really not acceptable. It was still loud through triple glazing in my bedroom. Poor animals.
