It's used in addresses in USA all the time where there is a suite number or apartment number, which I always thought weird.

Many people call it octothorpe and this name is linked to various telephone workers in the 1960s, and all claim the "Octo-" part refers to the eight points on the symbol, but the "Thorpe" remains a mystery. It's interesting how things evolve and become something new.
