My hubbie says you can convert to jpegs if you open them and then click save as and change the file extension to a jpeg. But yes also try photographing the original photographs and compare the quality with the scans to see which better. All a fiddly job but one of my best received pressies in recent years was an album made via an apple package.

The output as pdf only will likely be due to the way a human has configured the associated software, perhaps for simplicity or standardisation. Most standard formats should be available from most scanner software.

For DIY, you could certainly also try a camera, using the finest image ratings. Something in the 3000x2000 area will obviously give you a decent dpi count. Best use natural light and get all images, even of b/w photographs, in full colour; and save in the first instance in an uncompressed format if available, rather than in a compressed one. There are also free image viewing/editing programs available, such as Irfanview and Xnview, that let you do post-transfer tweaking.

Following an enquiry, posting a sample of what is possible. The original is a rather faded photobooth snap. The finished product is a gliclee print on textured uncoated heavy card, dimensions 25cm x 16cm.

    • We've just used Aaron and I'd strongly recommend him. Excellent plasterer. Not the cheapest but very tidy and quick – so good value for money. He cleaned up well and a nice bloke too.  Aaron Manser 07773 410661
    • Admittedly I have not gone  through that application with a fine tooth comb, riveting though it is (thank you for posting the link). However,  unless I have misunderstood, within the documents it says that  there are eleven properties associated with the application. Could someone at Tesco have made a mistake with the address,  and in fact it has nothing to do with Poundland? Sorry, somehow I have duplicated my own post, and I'm not sure how to remove the duplicate. DUH.
    • Surely it is not an "advert" for councillors? Why do you put "local" in inverted commas? Why the (lol)? What is so amusing? The board  is telling people who their councillors are. What on earth is "frivolous" about that? If you are so  concerned about the lack of information on the boards, why don't you do something about it (eg contact your local councillor with suggestions) instead of moaning on here?
    • I noticed another of these boards outside the leisure centre on the East Dulwich road side. it has one advert for the “local” councillors in it (lol) and nothing else. what a frivolous waste of opportunity,
