I thought ED was expensive but today went to Abbeville Road for some upmarket shopping and whilst there went into a cafe. Bacon sandwich ?6.50

New butchers The Ginger Pig had opened and we bought some basics in there.

Whilst we were there a guy bought a joint of beef for a 6 person dinner party. One piece of meat.... That will be ?84.85 please sir, (no word of a lie) and after a bit of a chat with his wife who thought a smaller joint might be ok for their 6 guests he decided he didn't want to scrimp and handed over his debit card. What fun.

Makes East Dulwich seem cheap. Also it makes East Dulwich seem rather run down and a bit grubby. ED has some nice shops but the pavements are rickety and grubby. Lots to improve. I don't seek the higher prices but I'd like lordship lane footpaths to be a bit smoother and look a lot tidier. It's a bit sh?t to be honest.

That last sentence has to be tongue in cheek Mick Mac, all part if your irish charm? Otherwise it's sounding like you've turned into a total snob.

If the joint was a long, whole fillet, 80 sounds pricey but within the realms of easily possible

How did your basics compare cost wise?

Average fillet steak is what, about a tenner at a butchers?

Easily get 8-10 of those on a proper fillet. So yeah less than 90quid

A big joint of silverside beef at ginger pig (just shy of 2 kilo) is 17 quid. Which sounds a lot less dramatic

?6.50 for a bacon sandwich is a rip off...it does not matter how well presented it is, or organic, or whatever. It is an exploitation of the supposed "wealthy image" of East Dulwich.

I've just returned from a journey in Spain; not as cheap as it used to be, but still, much more welcoming, cheaper and realistic. It showed me how capitalistic, greedy and materialistic we are in the UK.

We are still going through an "economic downturn"; amazing how in this "downturn" fuel prices are going up, house prices and fuel bills are still rising inexorably, travel costs and food prices are rising, and so on. I was always taught that "the MARKET" would adjust to downward price pressure.

If we are silly enough to pay ?6.50 for a bacon sandwich, we deserve all the debt and angst we get.

(Try buying a pint of beer for under ?2.00p. The drinks industry complains that pubs are closing. Here's a suggestion guys; Sell beer cheaper.)

That's enough ranting!

Er...yep, you can get a bacon sandwich for more than that in ED. You're going to the wrong places MM.

(don't think I'm allowed to mention this sparkling, shiny, full of lights place on forum tho)

TWO Ryedale farms received a royal seal of approval following a visit to the area by Prince Charles yesterday.

The royal patron of the Mutton Renaissance Campaign toured Grange Farm in Levisham, near Pickering, and spoke with Tim Wilson, and his staff who run the Ginger Pig enterprise, which rears, butchers and sells meat through a number of traditional shops in London and the local area.

Back in 2007 when I was working in the area, I purchased a 6-7oz Rib-Eye from The Ginger Pig in Borough Market.

Was about ?8.00 I seem to remember.

Glad to see someone has started a thread to have the pavements improved. I'm not the only one that finds them an eyesore.
