whats happened to the Bishop?

People love to bash th.. no, no I can?t do it

I know lots of people who don?t like the bishop, but I know many more who do. Any of the pubs on the Lane can, on a Saturday night be populated by the sorts of crowds described in the OP ? but then I keep well away from the Lane on weekend nights

But I?m a regular punter there during early week evenings and weekend days and the current crew (Oonagh, Rodrigo et al) couldn?t be nicer or more helpful.

The OP is unclear ? seems to say they are a regular visitor whilst simultaneously suggesting they hadn?t been for a while. In which case starting a thread on one night seems a bit harsh

Post codes / boundaries / whatever, the Gowlett along with Bellenden Road and that whole area are in bloody Peckham!

As, I suspect, is edhistory's house.

As for The Bishop, there is just something about the actual space that has always just left me a bit cold.

Every pub where I actually liked the space tends to close.

Can't think of many in London I feel really comfortable in.

I have a house in SE15 and on the title deeds it says it is in East Dulwich.

If you live in SE15 you live in Peckham, not East Dulwich. Ten years ago people trying to sell their house in SE15 may have tried to say otherwise, but nowadays saying you live in Peckham probably has more cachet anyway!

The Gowlett clearly thinks of itself as Peckham anyway, judging from their website.

And so they should, because they are located in Peckham!!

But... Brixton has always been much more lively than ED in terms of bars, clubs, gigs, and even restaurants. It's a nightlife destination, and has been for a long time. I don't think anyone ever thought "ED isn't as banging as it used to be, let's move to Brixton..."

Goose Green?

That must be somewhere very near East Dulwich Parish church.

John K

Indeed, the parish church on the edge of East Dulwich. Bomb it up Lordship Lane and you'll find the old St Peter's at the other end.

I used to know someone who lived on Adys Road more or less next door to St John's, and they very much saw themselves as being from Peckham.

Historical maps will show you all sorts. The Oval is Surrey's cricket ground for God's sake. East Dulwich Road and Forest Hill Road are basically the edges of East Dulwich.

I do remember them planning to change (I think) electoral boundaries in the 90s, and lots of businesses at the Goose Green end of Lordship Lane were up in arms at the thought of finding themselves in Peckham all of a sudden.
